As a composite art, film combines the image and music and within it, these two different arts become interdependent in a harmonious way. Music is an essential element in a film, which is an art of image production. In films, the combination of image and music is based on its scenario and there are some films which shares the same screenplay. The scenarios for these films are often based on literature, which means OSMU (One Source Multi Use) and it has become an important strategy in the contemporary culture industry. This paper aims to analyze OSMU case, especially the one where the novel becomes a film scenario. Les Miserables, firstly written as a novel by Victor Hugo in1862, has been recreated into a variety of genres like films, musicals, musical films as well as plays since the early nineteenth century. By focusing on three Les Miserables films recently released in 2012, 1998 and 1982, this study tries to analyze how these works musically interpret the same scenario in conjunction with the composer and its genre, and ultimately compare the musical characteristics in each film. Les Miserables in 1982, which was shot in France, the background of the novel, minimized the use of music in oder to emphasize the effect of plot by repeating the same soundtrack or not using it in key scenes. Also it shows its unique musical characteristic, that uses Choir to represent the religious color in the scenario and the change of Tonality to show the color of the season. The film in 1982, which represents the character's complicated mind through a simple melody, harmony and musical instrument composition, is closely related to its composer, Michel Magne’s style.
The version of 1998, which plays the similar amount of music like any other commercial films, uses the most common length of music among three. It creates the tension through not only the use of pedal point, chromatic motion, dissonant interval but also the contrast in the tone and tune of instruments, and offers a various musical use and expression by repeating the same figure as well as rhythm. In addition, it features in its image production where the main character’s characteristic differs from the original one. It seems that Les Miserables in 1998, whereleitmotiv does not appear clearly while the contrast of melody, chord progression and instrument tuning offer an strong connection with the scenes, is deeply related to its composer, Basil Poledouris. Pursuing the epic style, he writes the complicated compositions in conjunction with the theme. Lastly, Les Miserables in 2012, as a musical film, utilizes the direction of music more frequently than the previous works. First of all, in film, the use of motif and its expansion keep appearing, which reflects the feature of musical, a performing art. The film not only expressed its melodious characteristic through an unison, ostinato, a line cliche and a chromatic scale, but also renders the chord feature through the variety of key and parallel motion. In addition, it represents the religious color sense by using amen cadence. Since the version of 2012 shows a distinct genre characteristic asa musical film, its musical features are most diverse and distinct than the work of 1998and 1992. It seems that the version of 2012, showing a various musical use, is affected by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Cameron Mackintosh in terms of their style of arrangement. Even thought these three works do have different musical style, there are common elements and reason with how film use music. Music is used in film firstly, to represent the particular scene secondly, to create the tension thirdly, to play an important role which implies something fourthly, to express the characters’ mind, fifthly,to give an correlation between scenes as well as the characters, and lastly, to make and maximize the effect of irony. This paper demonstrates that image and music in films are played in different way even though they share the same scenario as each film is significantly affected by its genre, the composer, and the interpretation. One of the reasons why this kind of features appear is that those films are all based on the same screenplay, the original novel. The novel especially the masterpiece like Les Miserables, shows a high literary value based on its plot, which leads it to be used as OSMU with popularity. As a case of OSMU, Les Miserables obtains not only the artistic value but also the popularity at the same time, and it is surely obvious that to get two things is difficult. To gain the popularity of films which are based on the literature, it is necessary to analyze the musical element that entertains the audience. Hoping this study contributes to the film production, to be concrete the film scenario based on the literature, I expect a lot of films can get both cinematic, artistic value as well as popularity
