Two parts of the chemicophysical behaviors of predominant fission products (caesium, strontium, and iodine) were covered in regard to severe accidents at nuclear power plants. First, caesium and strontium species coprecipitated with iron(III) species were studied to determine the optimum pH value for minimizing the coprecipitation of these metal species and the volatilization of iodine species during the treatment of radioactively contaminated water. Caesium and strontium were quantified for the precipitates formed in aqueous solutions (pH: 7, 8, 9, ..., 13) of sodium hydroxide and metal chlorides including iron(III) chloride. The optimum pH value was found to be present near 7 because of lesser amounts of caesium precipitated at pH 7 and pH 8, the least amount of strontium precipitated at pH 7, and the iodine volatility known to be minimized at pH 7 or higher under gamma irradiation conditions. Second, decomposition of molecular iodine in water by hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide was studied to provide effective decomposition rate constants and their acquisition methodology simpler than mechanistic ones. For the sake of simplification, the concentration evolution data of triiodide ions were obtained instead of those of molecular iodine, and the number of reaction steps was reduced by grouping the steps. In this study, molecular iodine was more effectively decomposed by sodium hydroxide than by hydrogen peroxide. This thesis may provide helpful hints on treating the radioactively contaminated water, thus mitigating the consequences of accidents.
