This study aims to examine translation competence for game localization. The study is designed based on two research questions: What are the translation problems in the context of game localization?; What subcompetences constitute translation competence for game localization? Research questions above are examined by semi-structured in-depth interviews with four professionals from the game localization industry: one project manager, one reviewer, and two translators. Each interview was transcribed and analyzed thoroughly enough to discover nine keywords that reflect frequently occurred translation problems during the game localization process: characteristics, consistency, fluency, culture-specific items, humor, contextual information, due date, limited space, and poor treatment. These keywords hint subcompetences that are required to successfully complete the game localization process by solving aforementioned problems. Then the study borrowed O’Hagan and Mangiron’s translation competence model for game localization (2013, p. 254) which consists of four subcompetences-personal qualities and skills, translation skills, subject-specific knowledge (game literacy), and transferable professional skills-and PACTE’s translation competence model (2003, p. 18) which is comprised of six subcompetences–bilingual subcompetence, extralinguistic subcompetence, translation knowledge subcompetence, instrumental subcompetence, strategic subcompetence, and psycho-physiological components-to categorize the subcompetences that were discovered during the analysis. To sum up, both models can be used to explain subcompetences that are necessary to complete game localization process. However, O’Hagan and Mangiron’s model is insufficient to emphasize the importance of linguistic and cultural subcompetences since it puts those subcompetences together under the category of translation skills. On the other hand, PACTE’s model fails to highlight how essential game knowledge and experiences are to the translators of game localization. Thus, the study borrowed and modified both models to suggest a model that is specified to the context of game localization, by saying translation competence of game localization is made up of the combination of seven subcompetence: game knowledge subcompetence, bilingual subcompetence, extra-linguistic subcompetence, translation knowledge subcompetence, instrumental subcompetence, strategic subcompetence, and psycho-physiological components. It should be noticed that game knowledge subcompetence and strategic subcompetence have a priority among the seven. Despite the limitation of the scope, the study explores the concept of translation competence for game localization which is still relatively new and marginal in the field of Translation Studies, and suggests a model for translation competence of game localization. Further studies are expected to expand the size of the interviewees to give stronger support to the result.
