The effect of mandala art therapy on depression and self-esteem of the elderly living in elderly care facilities원문보기

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Mandala art therapy on the depression and self - esteem of the elderly living in elderly care facilities. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Mandara art therapy on the self - understanding, acceptance, and internal integration. The subjects of this study were 16 elderly people living in I elderly care facilities which is located in J-province I-city for the elderly, 8 were experimental group, and 8 were control group. In the experimental group and the control group, the elderly people over 65 years old had a pre-scored score of 14 or more on the Korean-American Geriatric Depression Scale (K-GDS), and the score of the RSES was between 10 and 30. Self-esteem scores and depression scores of the two groups were obtained by independent t-test. From November 22, 2017 to February 22, 2018, Mandara art therapy was administered to the experimental group twice a week for 60 minutes, for a total of 20 sessions. In order to verify the effect of this study, the experimental group and the control group were performed RM-ANOVA by their K-GDS and RSES program’s previous scores and post-scores. For qualitative analysis, the experimental groups were compared before and after the test, by using the tool Baum Test made by Emil Junker for an aid to human understanding and Charles Koch(1952) systematized it. The results of this study were summarized as follows. First, Mandala art therapy had a positive effect on the depression of elderly living in elderly care facilities. Compared with the control group, the experimental group with Mandala art therapy showed a decrease in scores of depression and K-GDS in the sub-factors of helplessness, anxiety, irritability and unhappiness. Also, as the session progressed, the depression of the experimental group decreased and the criticism and despair decreased and the positive and hopeful expression increased. Second, Mandala art therapy was proved to have a positive effect on the self-esteem of the elderly residing in the elderly care facility. As a result of Mandala art therapy, it was found that the experimental group showed a positive improvement on the RSES scale as compared to the control group. Also, as the session progressed, the self - esteem of the experimental group improved and the attachment to the work increased and the working time improved. And their participation in the program has increased. They showed positive interactions such as praising and encouraging each other's works. Thus Mandala art therapy proved to have a positive effect on depression and self-esteem for the elderly Living in Elderly Care Facilities. Mandala Art Therapy is a prototype that gives a basic sense of stability and helps to express inner moments when immersed in. Through this, self - understanding and acceptance have internal balance and recovery. Therefore, this study can be meaningful in that it verifies the effect of Mandala art therapy as a program for the positive recovery of depression intervention and self - esteem of the elderly in the facility.
