The main purpose of this study is to develop a teaching methodology for Korean non-verbal communication focusing on the Indian Korean language learners, so that the students can easily communicate with the native Korean speakers without any misunderstanding. The necessity and importance of this study is as follows. Firstly, since India and Korea have different cultures, difference in the non-verbal communication can lead to misunderstandings. Hence by this study will help to understanding both the cultures and also in eliminating the misunderstandings that are caused. Secondly, no study has been conducted on teaching methodology of Korean non-verbal communication to Indian Korean language learners.
Recently there has been an increase in the number of Indians studying Korean language by getting attracted to the Korean culture. And has increased the number of people working in Korean or East Asian companies. Non-verbal communication plays an important role while having a good conversation. But since it differs from culture to culture, it can lead to misunderstandings. For example, in India if one raises his/ her little finger then it indicates that the person wants to go to the washroom. Whereas in Korea the same action symbolizes as a lover. It is said that the biggest cultural differences exist primarily in terms of territorial space, eye contact, touch, and abusive behaviour. These aspects fall under the non-verbal communication. Hence it is important to teach non-verbal communication skills to the foreign language learners.
From this point of view, the study aims to develop Korean non-verbal communication teaching methodology to teach the Indian Korean language learners. For this study a survey was conducted focusing on the Indian Korean language learners in India to test their knowledge of the Korean non-verbal communication skills and to identify the problems faced by the learners. Also textbook analysis was done focusing on the textbooks that are being taught in India. On the basis of the survey result and the analysis of the textbooks, teaching methodology was developed. Teaching methodology was developed by the usage of illustrations or images and role-play by using drama or movie clips so that the learners are interested more about the language.
