Information and communication technologies developed even more rapidly in the 21st century, which had a big impact on society as a whole. Smartphones in particular are the embodiment of the cutting edge IT technologies and since 2009, it has increased in popularity and grown in influence on our daily lives. As the number of smartphone users has increased, the museums have begun to provide guide service for exhibitions and shows on mobile applications which they traditionally offered in the shape of docents or in-house guide devices. Although many museums have invested a large amount of money to release guide apps, the low number of downloads of the apps has caused controversy. Although Kwon Hye-mi (2011) and Lee Sun-kyung (2012) studied the improvement of app interactivity, while Koo Ji-hyang and Shin Dong-hee (2015) focused on the assessment of usability followed by Jung Da-woon and Ah Hyung-joon the succeeding year, ideas on a resolution for overall improvement was wanting in the previous studies. In this study, the aim was to set up an analysis frame based on the study of the current status of the app developed in domestic and foreign museums, in order to seek ways to prompt wider use of the exhibition guide apps. Firstly, a study was conducted on printed material regarding mobile learning in museums. Afterward, a case study was conducted on mobile apps produced by domestic and foreign organizations in order to derive common implications. Based on the analytic framework of the museum's app communication and previous researches, the structure for analysis of the mobile exhibition apps was constructed after the stage of modifications and recalibrations. Through this, the overall status of the app usage was charted and measures for activation were divulged. 55 exhibition guide apps produced in Korea and abroad were selected for analysis. The analysis framework was classified as interactivity, user diversity, content, user interface design, and accessibility, which were further subdivided into 19 categories. As a result, domestic cases have been found to be excellent in terms of diversity in information delivery methods, the reliability and adequacy of content, navigation range, the usefulness of terminology, mobile environment compatibility, access speed, operation and management, and ubiquitous accessibility. Categories that showed deviations across agencies are a range of languages offered services and update of contents. Overall, areas requiring improvement were shared functions, online participation, provision of information by the demographic, information quality, navigation capabilities, sense of enjoyability and personalization. Meanwhile, overseas examples have produced positive results on the diversity of information delivery, the reliability and recentness of content, navigation range, the unity of terminology, mobile environment compatibility, access speed, operation and management, and ubiquitous access. Categories that showed deviations across agencies are the ability to share functions, provision of information by the demographic, multilingual services, personalization and appropriateness of content, information quality, search options, and help functions. Those that needed improvement were online participation and the lack enjoyability in content. Based on this, a measure was derived for the purpose of this study which was to advocate a wider usage of exhibition guide applications. The first is to provide the edu-tainment application content and the personalized content in the form of a card. The second is to expand the communication space and share individual creations. Finally, dedicated organizations and an expert team must be secured. Mobile devices are constantly evolving and the demand is growing ever so high. As a result, many Korean museums have released numerous apps to provide a multimedia guide for their exhibits and are looking to improve them continuously. It is hoped that this study will increase reuse of existing apps and serve as a reference for future production of new apps. Moreover, hopefully, more audience will be gaining richer and richer museum experience through improved apps in the future.
