Effects of Animal Assisted Therapy on Social and Emotional Development and Emotional Responses of Children with Intellectual Disabilities and Autistic Spectrum Disorders원문보기

The purpose of this study is to examine how the Animal-assisted Therapy, conducted on children with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder, influences on children’s social and emotional development and emotional responses. From a special school in K province, fourth to sixth-grade students with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder participated in the research. Selected students were not classified as having multiple disabilities, but one single disability. Among the students whose parents have consented with their child’s participation, five of them were assigned to experimental group and another five to control group. The Animal-Assisted Therapy program was conducted throughout six weeks, a total of 12 sessions with two consecutive sessions per week. As for the research tool, social and emotional development scale and emotional responses scale were measured. In order to process data, as descriptive statistics, SPSS/WIN 24.0 program was employed. To determine the homogeneity between the experimental and control groups, non-parametric Mann-Whitney Test was conducted. As for the group comparisons, distribution-free Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test was conducted, which does not assume the normal distribution of the samples. In partial interval recording method, the whole sessions of the program were video-filmed under supervision of the author and two other experts in order to observe participant's behaviors. First, the experimental group on which the Animal-Assisted Therapy program was conducted showed a higher significant change in intrinsic control, feeling of stability at school and curiosity which are the sub-elements of social and emotional development Second, the experimental group on which the Animal-Assisted Therapy program was conducted showed a higher significant change in joy and control which are the sub-elements of emotional responses scale. Third, the experimental group on which the Animal-Assisted Therapy was conducted showed positive influences on their behaviors. With these results, it is verified that the Animal-Assisted Therapy has positive influences on social and emotional development and emotional responses of children with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder. Therefore, continuous research from both quantitative and qualitative angles on the subject with a variety of variables should be done in the future.
