The purpose of this study is to develop a parent education program based on Winnicott’s object relations theory through review over literatures and provide it to the mothers of play therapy child clients and then examine their experience of changes after participation in the program and understand the meaning of it. In order to examine the participants’practical experience after the program, this author conducted the Focus Group Interview(FGI) after completing the program. This researcher listened to the participants’vivid experiences and observed them as a therapist and then analyzed the data with the approach of qualitative content analysis. According to the results of analyzing the participants’ experiences, total 5 topics and 10 subtopics were drawn. 5 topics drawn in this way are‘the experience of being refreshed through the education, ‘doubts arising from practice for trial and error as well as regression’, ‘insight about the family of origin and recognition on the current pattern of mother-child relationship pattern’, ‘enlightenment about the necessity of a certain amount of education for change, and ‘the outlet and healing found from the critical situation’. The crucial results gained from this research are as follows. In order for the mothers of play therapy child clients to correct their dysfunctional rearing behavior and play positive parental roles, it is needed to have a certain amount of time for parent education. This implies that only with the 10-minute parent counseling conducted after play therapy that is currently being operated in the field of play therapy, it is limited for them to play effective parental roles demanded in play therapy and cooperate properly no matter how long play therapy or parent counseling is done. The results and significance of this study are as follows. After participating in the parent education program, the mothers of play therapy child clients understood and reflected themselves as parents better. This allows us to be enlightened about the fact that it is needed to have a certain amount of parent education to have a turning point to alter their parental roles. Also, through parent education, they had time for paternal healing. This study is significant in that it intrinsically motivated them to be a fairly good mom, which is facilitative environment that Winnicott talks about. The limitations and suggestions of this study are as follows. First, because the subjects are limited as this researcher and the mothers of child clients who completed play therapy, after providing the parent education program, it was difficult for this researcher to observe how the child clients changed according to how their parents changed directly. Second, as the educator of the program and the person in charge of the FGI were the same, this raises the problem of research ethics associated with dual relationship. Therefore, follow-up research should be designed to trace and observe how child clients change according to how their parents change after providing the parent education program of play therapy. Also, considering research ethics, it is necessary to separate the educator of the program from the person in charge of FGI and perform them separately as an alternative method. Furthermore, to provide parent education in terms of play therapy more efficiently, it is absolutely needed to enhance play therapists’ competencies by having them be trained and taught professionally and systematically about object relations theory or family counseling and adult counseling.
