With the growth of the luxury brand market, the cultural experiences of new lifestyles based on social networks are changing the ways or behaviors consumers choose and purchase luxury commodities. Accordingly, the luxury market, which can be traced back to that before the Industrial Revolution, deviated from the old concept of luxury in the past to produce a group of products featuring a new concept of luxury and applying new luxury strategies, and is on the trend of diversifying its brand management for profit generation. Since 2000, M&A of luxury brands and recruitment of global star designers have become visible. In addition, for the sustainable survival of luxury brands, companies that own multinational luxury brands are operating their businesses focusing on the expandability of luxury brand through globalization proposed by Kapferer and Bastien (2009), who emphasize the marketing aspect of globalization stating that, “a luxury brand that cannot go global finishes up disappearing; it is better to have a small nucleus of clients in every country-because there is every chance that it will grow-than a large nucleus in just one country, which could disappear overnight.” Luxury brands are maintaining a consistent and close business relationship with the old promotional medium of fashion magazines as the best way to achieve the expansion concept of 'globalization.' Current global luxury fashion brands need to launch and promote new products different from existing ‘luxury goods’ for continuous generation of profits. As a marketing means to effectively realize this goal, they are actively utilizing printed advertisements in fashion magazines. In a 2006 film, The Devil Wears Prada, inspired by a real fashion figure, Anna Wintour, the 'Miranda' character playing role of the editor-in-chief of Vogue fashion magazine in the United States exemplifies the‘power of global fashion magazines’indispensable for the success of fashion brands by highlighting her personal connections in the fashion industry and absolute relationships with fashion designers. However, the fast-changing trends in modern society and the expansion of luxury market on the internet especially through the communication of brand identity utilizing media mix of old and new media is leading to the expansion of a new generation of consumers and their increased active participation in conservative luxury fashion brands. Therefore, this study examines the interrelationship between design management and color image communication from multiple aspects of branding strategy by analyzing the color images of luxury fashion brands reflected in Vogue and Elle advertisements based on ‘the theory of 6-C of emotional economy and brand design management’ by Lee Hye-ju and Lee Sang-man (2006) in global luxury fashion brands. Based on the implications of the study results, this study proposed brand communication strategies necessary for global advancement of Korean domestic brands. The major findings of this study are as follows: First, examining the trend of luxury brand color image by year, it was found that the existing old luxury strategies are being operated flexibly according to the internal situations of individual brand and the changes in the market. In addition, luxury fashion brands shifted from existing conservative color image to innovative and trendy color image by opting the direction of open branding strategy adhering to minimal tradition. This can be interpreted as the strategic relatedness of ‘Communication Market Mix' design, which is an integrated circulation system of brand management in 6-C theory. Second, comparing the characteristic elements that changed according to the times based on the analysis of the branding strategies, it was found that the brand communication adopted by the luxury fashion brands according to the changes of brand concept and campaign or CD and CEO is ‘brand renewal’ aimed for recreating traditional identity. Third, according to the analysis of color image communication reflected in advertisements on Vogue and Elle fashion magazines, it was found that respective luxury fashion brand is applying old media and new media depending on its branding strategy. In addition, it was observed that the luxury fashion brands are applying trendy images according to the target type of subscribers in their advertisements on picture-oriented Vogue and commercial-oriented Elle. Comparing the results of the comprehensive analysis of each brand, this study identified the present condition of the old luxury group and the innovativeness of new luxury group and distinguished the ‘color communication mix design' applied in each brand. This study identified the communication design elements for the emotional differentiation suggested by the luxury fashion brands through the analysis of the color image reflected in advertisements on fashion magazines. The significance of this study lies in that it proposed brand communication strategies for the globalization of domestic luxury fashion brands from comparing and analyzing the flow and changes of their brand design management. This study is also meaningful in that it draws attention to the objective solutions for the growth of luxury fashion brand market. Academic endeavors are recommended for future empI.R.Ical studies that will effectively respond to the rapidly changing global market environment.
