Due to an emphasis on the need for practical English education in the English curriculum, phrasal verbs are attracting attention as learning materials of high practicality and authenticity. This study, thus, set out to examine the uses of phrasal verbs in English textbooks for the first grade of middle school. For this purpose, the study set the following research questions: first, what are the differences in the comparison and analysis of phrasal verbs between listening and reading in English textbooks for the first grade of middle school?; second, what are the differences between the phrasal verbs in the textbooks and those of high frequency in the corpora of COCA?; and third, what is the distribution of phrasal verbs in the textbooks according to type? The study analyzed ten different kinds of English textbooks that were written based on the Revised Curriculum of 2005 and used in middle schools in 2018. The analysis tool used in the study was AntConc 3.5.6, a corpus analysis program. The list of phrasal verbs of high COCA frequency by Liu(2011) was consulted to compare with the corpora of native speakers. The findings were as follows: first, the frequency of phrasal verbs was higher in reading than in listening in the textbooks with differences among the phrasal verbs frequently used in each area. Second, phrasal verbs of high frequency in the textbooks were compared with those in the daily life of native speakers between the listening in the textbooks and the spoken area in COCA and between the reading in the textbooks and fiction, magazines, newspapers, and academic areas in COCA. The results show that in general, the phrasal verbs frequently used by native speakers in daily life were also frequently used in the textbooks. Finally, the study categorized phrasal verbs into four types according to the criteria of Yong Mun(2017). The four types were intransitive phrasal verbs, transitive phrasal verbs, ones that were both intransitive and transitive, and phrasal-prepositional verbs. The investigator examined their distribution and found that the third type was used the most with the second type being hardly used. There were a couple of problems with the current presentation of phrasal verbs in textbooks: it was difficult to say that phrasal verbs were introduced in the order of learning, and there were huge differences in the degree of presenting phrasal verbs among publishing companies. These problems will be solved when the Ministry of Education offers a list of phrasal verbs whose learning is recommended by grade based on a clear set of criteria.
