The standardization of nursing processes such as patient handoffs will reduce the work burden and improve the communication between nurses, which will secure patient safety. The purpose of this study was to examine the current status of patient handoffs between nursing units using electronic medical records. The subjects were nurses working at the medical wards, surgical wards, and emergency departments of a general hospital in Gyeonggi-Do. A total of 187 responses to questionnaires were analyzed. Results showed that nurses performed handoffs 8.1 times per week on an average between nursing units and spent 50.5 minutes on average for each handoff. In most cases, the handoff was carried out by first reading the electronic medical records followed by phone calls or Microsoft Lync to check for additional details. Although nurses thought that handoffs are important for patient safety, they were less convinced about the accuracy of the handoff. Participants learned how to perform handoffs from seniors and colleagues. Nurses are not satisfied with the current form of electronic medical records for handoffs, and hence are demanding a standardized checklist. Errors in the handoff between nursing units have resulted in the disruption of work, and were caused by excessive workload, interruption of handoff, and individual characteristics. The implementation and importance among handoff items between nursing units were influenced by the organizational policies. In conclusion, this study identified the characteristics of handoff between nursing units using electronic medical records. Based on its results, it is suggested that researches on the development and evaluation of the handoff protocol between nursing units using electronic medical records, and repeated researches extended to various hospital levels are needed.
