The objective of this study was to examine the dramatized contents of original novels. Dramatization does not mean a simple change of medium. Rather it means the re-creation of original works according to the language and form of medium. In this study, the author examined the medium switch-oriented changes of original work in the course of dramatization of original novels into movies or dramas, and then looked into the changes of Chinese original work’s sensitivity in the course of its switch into Korean cultural contents. For this, this study analyzed Chinese novels 『The Chronicle of Blood Seller Xusanguan (許三觀 賣血記)』 and 『Every Step in Astonishment (步步驚心)』, and its dramatized movie and TV drama , focusing on their texts. In order to analyze texts, this study compared backgrounds, figures, themes, stories, wordings and visual images. The background of Chinese novel 『The Chronicle of Blood Seller Xusanguan (許三觀賣血記)』 is a unique political event, namely the Cultural Revolution, and Korean people could not easily understand it. Therefore, the director of movie intentionally weakened the effect of its novelistic background and then presented family love, focusing on ‘love between father and son.’ TV drama used the first period of Goryeo Dynasty as its historical background, thus applying original novel’s historical background, namely ‘Jiulongduodi (九龍奪嫡: nine princes’ struggle for imperial power). Regarding figures, movie maintained nearly all the main figures of original novel and did not add other figures, thus being faithful to its original work. Rather it eliminated unimportant figures according to Korean background. On the other hand, TV drama added figures who do not exist in original work and highlighted conflicts among them. In addition, it added figures and then more intensively developed emotional expressions. For example, it added empress Ryu, court lady Oh and empress Hwangbo and made their relationship with Taejo Wang Geon complex and emotional conflicts among them developed actively. By adding princess Yeonhwa, it aroused conflicts between the third prince and the fourth prince, between the fourth prince and the eighth prince, and between the fourth prince and heroine, and made their emotions turned complex. In the process of dramatization, themes changed as well. Movie did not dramatize the whole story of novel 『The Chronicle of Blood Seller Xusanguan (許三觀賣血記)』 completely. Rather it used a 40% of original story, thus sublimating it into a new genre of art. The reason seems to be in that novel 『The Chronicle of Blood Seller Xusanguan (許三觀賣血記)』 is an ideological novel which includes some elements that cannot be easily visualized. TV drama also did not dramatize the whole story of novel 『Every Step in Astonishment (步步驚心)』 completely. Rather it used a 30% of original story. However, it did not change the thematic consciousness of original novel greatly, since there are many similar elements between imperial power and kingship, and two countries have cultural common points, though their historical backgrounds are different. In addition, novels of which medium is language can appropriately describe historical backgrounds which cannot be easily visualized and human being’s complex inner sides which are at a round of war. On the other hand, movies do not use the method of describing abstract concepts, but choose the method of direct visualization for audience. Finally, the dramatized emotions of Korean and Chinese were compared from three aspects, such as historical and social environment, interpretation of figures, and emotions. Regarding historical and social environment, Chinese imperial power in ancient times was most important and ruled over all things. Whereas the influence of powerful local families in Korea was stronger than royal authority, and aroused conflicts with loyal families. In addition, China was stronger in ‘social’ nature and ‘family’ is subordinate to ‘society’, whereas Korea attached greater importance to the establishment of ‘family’ mode. Regarding the interpretation of figures, Chinese novels 『The Chronicle of Blood Seller Xusanguan (許三觀賣血記)』 and 『Every Step in Astonishment (步步驚心)』 describe the emotion of figures positively. On the other hand, Korean movie and TV drama actively reveal the dark side of figures. Besides the dramatized works explosively present the emotion of figures, as the conflicts among figures increase. Regarding the aspect of emotions, Chinese people express their emotions not directly but indirectly in general. Both novels 『The Chronicle of Blood Seller Xusanguan (許三觀賣血記)』 and 『Every Step in Astonishment (步步驚心)』 are the case and they conclude their story tragically. On the other hand, Korean people express their feelings directly in general and prefer happy endings. Movie is the case. Chinese people express their feelings for power or desires more aggressively, whereas Korean people suppress their feelings always but explode it in unavoidable circumstances for families or lovers. TV drama presents this modality of feelings. As the above study findings show, dramatization produces the second creative works through the acceptance or transformation of original works. In addition, dramatization of original works seems to be closely related to historical/social/emotional elements which are reflected on dramatized contents.
