As a learner, being agentically engaged is about taking initiative to bring about positive changes in one’s learning, in oneself, and in one’s surrounding environment. Adopting a holistic approach that integrates social-cognitive and self-determination theories, the purpose of this study was to examine the key underlying determinants that facilitate longitudinal increases in agentic engagement. Using a two-wave longitudinal design, Korean middle school students (N = 540) completed questionnaires to self-report their perceptions of three hypothesized individual level characteristics (self-efficacy, autonomy need satisfaction, and personal growth initiative) and two hypothesized contextual precursors (teacher autonomy support and peer relatedness support) that underpin agentic engagement while teachers (N = 17) rated each student’s agentic engagement. The key finding was that only one individual-level predictor, self-efficacy, significantly predicted corresponding longitudinal increases in agentic engagement. Taken together, the findings lend insight into how students’ agentic engagement arises more from their inner motivations pertaining to their perceived capabilities to effectively meet the demands and challenges of initiating changes to the environment, which in turn, enables them to further seek out for more need-satisfying and motivationally enriching learning experiences.
