This study aimed at examining the effects of Food Art Therapy program on the improvement of self-expression and sociability among children from low-income class. To this end, the following research questions were set up. The first question is: Is Food Art Therapy program effective on improving the self-expression of children from low-income class? The second question is: Is Food Art Therapy program effective on improving the sociability of children from low-income class? In order answer to the questions above, among first to third graders who went to two local children centers in P city, children who seemed to be poor at self-expression and sociability were introduced through the teachers in charge of the centers. Among them, 16 children whose parents allowed them to participate in the study were divided into an experimental group of eight and a control group of eight. Based on preceding studies, Food Art Therapy program was reconstituted with 10 sessions by this researcher in a way that was suited for improving the children’s self-expression and sociability with reflection on the development stages of children from low-income class. The experimental group participated in the Food Art Therapy program twice per week for 80 minutes, and the control group did not receive any therapy. The control group would participate in the program when the effectiveness of the program was proved. In order to prove the effectiveness of the program, the results from tests on the children’s self-expression and sociability before and after the program were processed through statistical methods including independent sample t-test and ANCOVA using SPSS/WIN 22.0. In addition, based on the subjects’ work activities and presentation contents and this researcher’s contents of observation, a qualitative analysis was carried out. The following results were acquired. First, the self-expression scores of the experimental group that participated in the Food Art Therapy program were compared with those of the control group. The result showed that the self-expression of the experimental group significantly improved. Second, the sociability scores of the experimental group that participated in the program were compared with those of the control group. According to the result, the sociability of the experimental group significantly improved. Third, according to the results from the analysis of the subjects’ works and presentation contents and this researcher’s contents of observation, The Food Art Therapy program had a positive effect on improving the self-expression and sociability of children from low-income class. This study is limited in that the number of the subjects who participated in it is small and that the program was carried out for a short period. Nevertheless, it reached the conclusion that Food Art Therapy programs are effective on improving the self-expression and sociability of children from low-income class who are growing under poor environmental conditions. Therefore, this study suggests that local children centers which include children from low-income class should carry out Food Art programs in order to improve their self-expression and sociability.
