This study intends to present ideas on how to improve pragmatic competence of learners of elementary Korean through teaching in classroom. Pragmatic competence refers to being able to use language properly in a context rather than simply knowing an expression and its meaning. Up until now, studies on pragmatic instruction in Korean language education have been primarily conducted for learners of intermediate and higher levels. However, Korean honorific, address/reference terms, and speech acts of request, suggestion, acceptance and refusal are taught from the beginner’s level. If these items are taught without providing pragmatic features, learners will have difficulty in using them appropriately in communication and potentially risk pragmatic fossilization. To this end, this study proposes to start pragmatic instruction for learners of Korean from the beginner’s level. Section 1 clarifies the objectives of this study and the methods used to develop ideas of pragmatic instruction for learners of elementary Korean. Textbook analysis and surveys on learners are employed to identify current deficiencies in pragmatic instruction for learners of elementary Korean as previous studies lack in either textbook analysis or learner surveys or both. Also, few studies have proposed a teaching-learning plan to help learners develop their L2 pragmatic competence. Section 2 discusses the necessity of pragmatic instruction for learners of elementary Korean along with when and how to teach pragmatic features. Numerous studies in various languages have shown that learners who do not receive pragmatic instruction might not achieve their goals in communication because they offend their interlocutor. Studies in other languages also show that pragmatic instruction needs to be provided in the early stage of language learning. In addition, research suggests that pragmatic teaching should focus on improving learners’ communicative competence by raising learners’ awareness of pragmatic features. With regards to what to teach in pragmatic instruction for learners of elementary Korean, the syllabi of current Korean textbooks indicate that Korean honorific, terms of address/reference, and selective speech acts require pragmatic input in teaching. Section 3 investigates how Korean honorific, terms of address/reference, and selective speech acts are currently taught by analysing textbooks of elementary Korean. Textbook analysis finds the following problems in common: most sample conversations do not clearly indicate the relations between participants or what kind of circumstances under which the participants are speaking. Also, in terms of the relations between participants in conversation, cases of [=power, +distance] are dominant while those of [+power, ±distance] or [=power, -distance] rarely appear. Section 4 investigates how learners are able to use Korean honorific, terms of address/reference and how they perform selective speech acts mainly through discourse completion tests. The test results find the following problems in common: learners either do not know the expressions that should differ based on who their interlocutor is or are not able to use them appropriately. In particular, learners have difficulty in using correct vocabulary or verb endings as warranted by the social context and relative status of their collocutor even when the learner correctly assess those variables. This seems attributable to fact that textbooks do not provide sufficient pragmatic input in their instruction and dialogues. Section 5 proposes ideas on pragmatic teaching for learners of elementary Korean based on the findings of Section 3 and 4 as follows: First, appropriate expressions and relevant contextual information for learners including the relations between interlocutors should be provided. Second, the proportion of conversations in the textbooks should be as equal as possible in terms of relations between interlocutors. Third, because learners of elementary Korean are still unfamiliar with the grammatical forms of their target language, opportunities to focus on forms should be sufficiently provided for them. Section 6 summarizes the main idea of this study and reiterates the necessity of pragmatic teaching for learners of elementary Korean. This study is a first of its kind working comprehensively on pragmatic teaching for learners of elementary Korean. Future research should look at the effect of pragmatic instruction on learners’ pragmatic competence through empirical studies.
