This study aims to examine the influence of group language therapy using emotion speaking program on the pragmatic language ability and self-esteem of children and adolescents with mild intellectual disability. The objects living in Busan Metropolitan City diagnosed with mild intellectual disability were selected and divided into the control group and the experimental group. The control group was composed of three middle school students and the experimental group was composed of three middle school students and three elementary school students. Experiments were conducted twice a week for 16 times in total – one preliminary test, 14 mediation tests and 1 ex post test - from March to May of 2018. The adolescents were divided into the control and the experimental group to see the mediation effect of he program, and comparative analysis was conducted for the experimental group of adolescents and the experimental group of children to confirm the effect of the program for different age groups. The tools of examination were made by revising and supplementing the checklist for social communication to see the ability of pragmatic language (Ji-hye Park, Wha-Soo Kim, Jeong-sik Park, 2013), and the scale of self-esteem for examination of self-esteem (Guk-hwa Han, 2009). The results of examination were analyzed with SPSS 23.0 program, and the difference between the pretest and posttest was analyzed through t-test. The following are the results of the research. Firstly, the group language therapy conducted with emotion speaking program improved social communication ability better than the one conducted with ordinary sociality group language therapy and had statistically meaningful difference. In particular, meaningful difference occurred in the emotion expression and verbal and syntactic ability among the questions. Secondly, there was no statistically meaningful difference in self-esteem between the control group and the experimental group by mediation. However, according to the comparison of groups before and after the experiment, the adolescents of the experimental group had meaningful difference in self-esteem though there is no statistically meaningful change observed in the adolescents of the control group. Thirdly, the group of younger children showed more range of change in social communication ability and self-esteem. Thus, putting together the results of the research, the group language therapy mediated by emotion speaking program makes a positive effect on the improvement of social communication ability and also have an influence on self-esteem. Also, while age makes a positive effect on all experimental groups, the younger groups showed a wider variation. The number of objects in this research is restricted and the number of mediation is 16 which is rather short. Therefore, it will be difficult to generalize the results of this research and follow-up researches are needed by extending the research period and designing researches for various age groups. It is necessary to complement the group language therapy using emotion speaking program and make active mediation during school age when much of self-esteem and social interaction are developed.
