Trace organic contaminants such as pharmaceutical compounds, agricultural chemicals and ones discharged from non-point sources are flowing into wastewater treatment plants. These contaminants flow back to the water systems through wastewater treatment plants effluent without proper treatment. Due to the environmental issues(such as carcinogenicity) and non-degradability of trace organic contaminants, interest in removing these compounds from existing wastewater treatment plants have been increasing worldwide. At present, domestic wastewater treatment plants have applied not only conventional processes such as activated sludge and membraneprocesses, but also relatively new processes such as oxidation, biofilm and enzyme treatment for removal. This study measured residual concentrations of trace organic contaminants of influent and effluent in the existing wastewater treatment plants, on oxidation process(chlorine disinfection) and biofilm process filled with the media. Based on these results, the removal efficiency of trace organic contaminants by oxidation and biofilm processes was examined. As a result, the removal efficiencies of both the oxidation and the biofilm processes were superior to those of the non-oxidation and non-biofilm processes. Therefore, it has been confirmed that introducing a tertiary treatment process such as oxidation processes rather than conventional processes are necessary in order to remove trace organic contaminants in wastewater. However, this study only compared and analyzed the trace organic contaminants in the influent and effluent of the wastewater treatment plants. Additional research is required for batter assessment in removal of total trace organic contaminants by unit process.
