In the midst of high economic growth and a rapid wave of industrialization, early industrial society faced a number of social problems. By 1900, a period of rapid change within industrial society, other fields, including design, also radically developed as a result of the extension of the development of machine civilization. However, behind all this commercial and economic growth, social problems such as environmental problems and human alienation have arisen and added to the seriousness of the issue. As a result, reflective movements that strongly acknowledge social responsibilities inevitably appeared at all levels. At the same time, social roles and responsibilities within design also emerged. Social design is not only focused on solving social problems, but also emerged as a pattern of behavior in practical design that positively affects society. Early social design focused on global social issues such as the environment and human rights issues, and produced results centered on physical product design. On the other hand, people started to mainly deal with social issues that are closely related to life, especially those that respect and consider the daily lives of individuals. Design outcomes are not only visible, but are also expressed as invisible communication and experience. Well-known examples include community design, service design for social innovation, and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). This thesis attempts to develop a discussion by hypothesizing that there is a clear difference between social design from a traditional point of view and social design from a modern point of view, assuming that the concept and form of design have changed a great deal in the course of a century, since the emergence of social design. It also seems necessary to establish anew perspective and concept for social design. This makes this thesis meaningful in establishing the concept and characteristics of advanced social design in modern society. A clear example that this thesis pays attention to is the civil society movement in which design is applied in the public environment. I refer to this social phenomenon as a “citizen-led social campaign design.” In addition, “social campaign design methodology”—which can be utilized by citizens who want to have a social voice—was established to provide a new and practical foundation for social design. Specific directions for future use were also suggested. The purpose of this study is to clarify a new phenomenon, so it is necessary to closely and qualitatively examine the parts that are not exposed on the surface. Thus, qualitative research was conducted, and the main research tools were literature-based surveys, in-depth interviews, and case studies.
The research process and derived content were as follows.
First, four key words of social design development direction in modern society were derived by conducting a literature-based research method. Based on existing theories for interpretation, this study examined changes in the paradigm of design and communication, while also looking closely at the characteristics and changes of social design according to each particular era. The characteristics of social design that evolved in the present day were largely separated into four categories: the invisible form, which is based on communication; everyday social themes close to life; two-way communication that leads to the interaction of message provider and recipient; and design by the changed subject, which means design by non-professional designers(citizens).
Second, as a typical phenomenon of social design today (as mentioned above), this study looked at citizen-led social campaign design, which often occurs in the public sphere, on top of established concepts, characteristics, the background of its emergence, and communication components. As this is a discourse that needs to be conceptualized (as opposed to being an established concept), I gave shape to evidence for the discussion while conducting theoretical reviews, case studies, and in-depth interviews with 15 social campaign activists. In the past, civil society movements showed a some what one-sided, linear communication and left a negative impression on people. However, it has been confirmed that recent civil society movements on the streets have actively utilized design to promote the public interest and improve the visual appeal of the movements in order to persuade people through the messages of the movements.
Third, this study conducted a non-participatory observation research on 12 cases of citizen-led social campaign designs in the domestic public environment within the last two years. Based on the requirements of social campaign communication, the analysis method was to derive design elements by combining various aspects of environmental, communication, and visual perspectives in multiple ways. This study developed a social communication type matrix based on communication and expression aspects. Finally, it presented four stereotypes: the voice type, the display type, the peer-to-peer type, and the participation-induction type. The concept, design characteristics and application direction of each type were also established. Fourth, social campaign design methodology with citizens as the audience was suggested in order to provide a practical support plan. Specifically, the issue was explained with terms such as the five steps of the “social campaign design process,” “checklist,” “ethical awareness for production and execution,” and “essential requirements of social campaigns.”Furthermore, this study efficiently supported the suggested methodology by devising a “plan for simulation application.”
Fifth, I suggested the social campaign design guidelines in the form of open-source toolkit which would make it easy to use and highly accessible when utilizing the results of this study in the future, and then, I summarized the principles of production establishment. Social campaign design has different characteristics from existing commercial design and social design, so it needs a proper approach to social campaign design. As a core issue, people who are non-professional designers are considered readers and emphasis should be put on easy understanding and convenient use. It is also necessary to keep in mind that ethical behavior patterns are required because it is a non-profit social activity. The six principles in establishing social campaign design guidelines suggested here are easy level, simplicity, reality, interactive communication, motivation and environment-friendly.
This study judged that the evolved social design of modern society is citizen-led design in the form of invisible communication. Citizen-led social campaign design was suggested as atypical model here in my study, social campaign design methodology was established as a concrete application method. It is meaningful to make practical use of design for people who make social remarks based on non-profit purposes and to lay the foundation for it. In addition, the subject of the use of design extends from the area of experts to people who are non-professionals, thus revealing the possibility of a democratic role for design. If the development direction of public environment design has stayed in the physical point of view so far, this study has differentiated itself by suggesting a new and non-physical point of view: communication design of the public environment. Furthermore, it is expected that the social use of design will be practically expanded through the creative approach of social design, one suitable for modern society.
