Environmental cognition objects refer to public visual media such as traffic signs, sign boards and many types of signage that provide people with information needed to live in cities. With the distribution of smartphones, however, accidents caused by pedestrians not being able to recognize environmental cognition objects became a social problem. Based on a cognitive psychological approach, this study aims to attract the eyes of people using smartphones while walking as well as find out what is required of environmental cognition objects to increase eye-fixation and cognition of smartphone users. Thus, this study conducted an eye-tracking experiment of environmental cognition objects exposed on the roads, followed by a survey where we measured and analyzed the level of cognition. Based on the results of the experiment, we will discuss the efficient arrangement of environmental cognition objects along with the right location and layout of the objects.
A number of new words coined to refer to people using smartphones while walking represent how human behavior, specifically their walking habit, change with the advent of a new tool. Especially, smartphone use of pedestrians has become a social problem because it poses a great threat on the roads. Against this backdrop, some people claim that pedestrians need to refrain from using smartphones while walking for safety. However, now that smartphones are already part of our daily lives, not only pedestrians themselves need to take caution but also safety solutions are urgently needed to protect them. Prior to this study, the researcher picked “eye-fixation” as the first condition for recognizing information needed for safe walking. “Fixating eyes” implies staring straight at a point in space while not necessarily “recognizing” an object with attention. However, you have to “fixate” your eyes on something in order to “recognize” the object with attention. In other words, “eye-fixation” is a necessary condition for “attention,” while “attention” is a sufficient condition for “eye-fixation.” Therefore, pedestrians need to precisely fixate their eyes on environmental cognition objects and check information to ensure safety while walking. However, if they have their eyes glued to smartphones while walking, they cannot identify the factors that need to be recognized in their surroundings. That is, pedestrians who fail to fixate on environmental cognition objects with their eyes fail to receive information, and this can ultimately lead to an accident.
This study focused on two factors that manage a person’s gaze control as the variables that can affect smartphone users on the road: the height of environmental cognition objects and their precueing type. The researcher of this study focused on the fact that people who use smartphones while walking, unlike general pedestrians, have their gaze directed to the floor and are slow to acquire and respond to information. Thus, “the height of environmental cognition objects” and “the precueing type of environmental cognition objects” were thought to be the two variables that are directly related to the safety of pedestrians using smartphones. Accordingly, an eye-tracking experiment was conducted to analyze patterns of people fixating their eyes on cognition objects. Then, a post-experiment survey was carried out to measure and analyze the level of cognition. In summary, this research studied conditions required of environmental cognition objects to be clearly recognized by pedestrians, focusing on eye-fixation and cognition of people using smartphones while walking. In addition, this study aims to discuss concrete solutions for the actual walkway environment based on its findings.
The research question that we formulated in this process was “can an environmental cognition object dictate the level of eye-fixation and cognition of a pedestrian.” Our two hypotheses were as follows: First, depending on the height of environmental cognition objects, the levels of eye-fixation and cognition of pedestrians using a smartphone show significant differences. Second, depending on the type of precueing of environmental cognition objects, the levels of eye-fixation and cognition of pedestrians using a smartphone show significant differences.
The subjects were divided into a group of smartphone users and a group of people who do not use smartphones. This is because we wanted to make sure that the findings of this study should be applicable not only to those who use smartphones while walking but also to general pedestrians. The environment of the experiment was configured based on reference to and adaptation of precedent studies. The method of the experiment involved measuring the level of the subjects’ cognition while having them explore environmental cognition objects in the walkway and watch a video clip on their smartphone at the same time. An eye-tracker was used to analyze whether the subjects made a proper eye-fixation on the cognition object. Then the level of eye-fixation was calculated based on the number and the duration of the subjects’ eye-fixation on the object. Also, a post-experiment survey with an ordinal scale was used to learn how well the subjects recognized the objects. In other words, the subjects were made to rank the objects that they can remember in the survey.
If an environmental cognition object is identified by a pedestrian (eye-fixation) and is absorbed as information (cognition), accidents coming from pedestrians’ inability to receive surrounding information will be prevented and the danger will be minimized. In fact, the experiment showed a significant difference between the levels of eye-fixation and cognition of people using smartphones while walking and those of general pedestrians, which helped us find ways to reduce pedestrian accident. According to the experiment, it was found that installing an object 600-1200mm high helped the pedestrians most in acquiring information whether they used smartphones or not. In addition, precueing with same-object advantage proved to be most helpful regardless of the subjects’ smartphone use.
It is needless to say that pedestrians themselves need to take caution and should not use smartphones while walking. Nonetheless, enforcing a ban on using smartphones while walking cannot be a fundamental solution to the problem at this moment. Thus, efforts should be made to seek ways for more efficient object plans in parallel with boosting pedestrians' attention. We expect that readjusting the layout and arrangement of environmental cognition objects based on the findings of this study will reduce the danger of accident for those using smartphones while walking.
Offering adequate and flexible solutions to changing human behavior and life patterns in cities is one of the main roles of public design for urban environment, which is also why this study is of great importance at this moment. This study holds significance in that it contributes to ensuring safety of city residents and is expected to serve as a useful reference for finding design solutions of environmental cognition objects in the future.
