In recent years, ceramics have many applications in various fields such as electric vehicles, reactors, micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) and thermal power plants because of their excellent properties such as high strength, heat resistance, electrical insulation and abrasion resistance etc, For various real situations, ceramic needs to be joined with metals to make a complex structure because of the ceramic’s brittleness properties. In recent years, many studies have been conducted to braze metal with ceramic such as laser beam method and metalizing method, diffusion method etc. Among these studies, the active metal brazing method is economical and reliable method. The active metal brazing process adds an active metal to the filler between the metal and the ceramic. when the brazing temperature is reached, the active metal and the ceramic react with each other to form oxides at the interface, thereby causing bonding.
In this paper, we have experimented the bonding of alumina to copper using Ag-Cu-Ti filler metal containing various content of Sn. Prior to this experiment, the wettability test was carried out at 880℃, to check the wettability of each filler metal samples. The wettability test showed that C3 sample containing 5 wt% of Sn has the best wettability and 10 wt % of Sn sample’s wettability was significantly decreased. In order to identify the phases of the filler metal, XRD investigation of each filler metal was carried out. XRD result show that Cu3Ti phase was detected in the specimen C1(without Sn) and Cu10Sn3 and SnTi3 phase were detected when Sn was added. Especially, the SnTi3 peak increased as the content of Sn increased.
As a result of examining the microstructure of the filler metal, the Ag-Cu eutectic phase was detected in the case of Sn-free specimen, but when Sn was added, SnTi3 phase was detected and eutectic phase was not detected.
As a result of observation of the microstructure at the bonding interface, it was confirmed that the specimen containing 10 wt% of Sn has thicker interface than the specimen containing 3 wt% of Sn. This seems to be related to the fact that the more Sn is added, more (CuTiSn)O phase is created at the interface. This confirmed that the bonding strength was weakened. In the hardness test, it can be seen that the hardness increases as the amount of Sn added increases, which can be attributed to the increase in the formation of the SnTi3 phase. In addition, it is confirmed that the hardness is higher near the alumina, because near alumina side the O and Ti react with each other and form TiO oxide.
In the investigation of the edge analysis result shows that the best wettability of the specimen is 5 wt% of Sn and without Sn and 10 wt% Sn specimen has poor edge bonding. This result same as previous spreading test.
In the microstructure of bonding interface, without Sn specimen has CuxTi phase and with Sn specimens has Ti3Sn and Ti Oxide this is the same result as the XRD test of the fracture surface.
As predicted from the previous wetting test and microstructure observation Sn 5wt% specimen has the highest shear strength 14.2Mpa. the specimens containing 10 wt% of Sn were measured to have lower shear strength than specimens without Sn. This can be seen as a result of the reaction layer thickness at the bonding interface and Sn disturb the reaction of Ti with O.
The fracture surface microstructure was analyzed with specimens containing 10 wt% of Sn. The fracture occurred at the alumina side, At the fracture surface has some un-bonded area and cracks and the fracture started at that part.
5 wt% of Sn has the best wettability and bond strength. it was confirmed that when a proper amount of Sn was added Filler metal act with alumina properly and get sound joint.
