This thesis is about a research on the programs of my graduation performance for Master's degree. It was composed of works of composers representing the musical history in Western countries. As anaylizing on those works, this thesis also shows my studies of various musical conventions including composer's musical interpretation, emotional expressions revealing via lyrics, the music's melody, rhythm, and harmony.
Gioacchino Rossini(1792-1868), who is a Italian composer, retired with his opera, William Tell, in his age of 37 in 1928. After his retirement, at the age of 71, he composed Petite Messe Solennell in 1863. It was one of his last works and was the most well-known and important work. O salutaris hostia is based on conventional technique and it used a lot of harmonical shifts as in its prelude, which make us think of Opera's Aria.
5 Lieder, Op. 105 by Johannes Brahms(1833-1897) consisted of Wie Melodien zieht es mir, Immer leise wird mein Schlummer, Klage, Auf dem kirchhofe, and Verrat. They are five songs in the cycle. He composed 203 songs from 1851 to 1896. At this period, there were many songs that were influenced by folk songs. Songs had strophic forms, fines in folk songs. Op. 105 shows especially love, loneliness, nature, death, and betrayal in Brahms's way.
Op. 23 that Gabriel Fauré(1845-1924) wrote includes 3 songs, which were Les Berceaux, Notre Amour, and Le Secret. First song, Les Berceaux, was written with the lyrics of a poem of Sully Prudhomme. Sully Prudhomme is a Parnassian poet and also the first Nobel Prize winner in 1907. Notre Amour and Le Secret are two songs that composed with a poem that Armand Silverstre wrote in 1879. This song cycle is one of his early songs. It is about both love of youth and dark sadness of farewell as comparing a life. He wrote in strophic form with a simple accompaniment and lyrical melody.
Antonio Dvořk(1841-1904) is a composer representing the Czech. The script of Rusalka, Op. 114, was written by Jaroslav Kvapil. Rusalka is the most well-known work in 3 parts in the opera. Dvořk refered stories of Undine, The Little Mermaid, The sunken Bell, Božena Němcová and etc. Měsíču na nebi hlubokém is the most popular aria.
Rusalka is a bohemian mermaid, who sings to the moon about a prince. The aria shows the musical technique so well that you can feel some beautiful colors when listening.
Giacomo Puccini(1858-1924) wrote his last opera, Turandot. Its background is China, and made with the script of G.Adami and R.Simoni. In Turandot, Liu's aria, Signore, Ascolta! and Tu, che di gel sei cinta, are beautiful aria of Liu's, who sacrifices to save the loving prince. It is sung beautifully with it's special magical melody.
