Relationship between Physical Function Factors and Discrimination Experiences of the Elderly in Korea : Using the 2014 and 2017 National Survey on Living Conditions and Welfare Needs of Korean Older Persons원문보기

Population aging is a global issue, and Korea is approaching a super-aged society with a much more rapid speed compared to other countries. Supporting the elderly population is presented as not only an individual or family-based issue but also a social issue, and it affects age discrimination, which forms a negative perception and avoids the elderly. Age discrimination leads to many problems related to the elderly; for example, it acts as a factor that lowers the quality of life of the elderly at the individual level and hinders social unity by causing intergenerational conflicts at the societal level. Thus, the prevention of and intervention for age discrimination are important. Previous studies on age discrimination found that elderly individuals with poor health had a higher chance of being age-discriminated and that the number of discrimination experiences related to physical aging was high among the types of discriminations; however, there is no research analyzing discrimination experiences with the characteristics of physical functions as related factors. Thus, our research examined the physical function of the elderly as a factor that influences discrimination experiences and aimed to identify the relationship between physical function factors and discrimination experiences. We used data from the 2014 and 2017 Survey of living conditions and welfare needs of Korean older persons, which were conducted nationwide among the elderly older than 65 years. Among the 20,750 respondents in the survey, 386 proxy respondents and 139 respondents with missing independent variables were excluded, resulting in a total of 20,225 respondents for our analyses. We performed descriptive analyses, Rao-Scott Chi-square tests, and logistic regression that reflected survey characteristics by dividing the related variables into four models. Model 1 examined the relationship between physical function factors and discrimination experiences. The sociodemographic factors were added in Model 2 and the factors related to health were added in Model 3. Finally, Model 4 also controlled for social support factors. The analyses were performed using SAS version 9.4. The results showed that the number of elderly persons who faced discrimination experiences was 1,175(5.8%). The results of multivariable analyses using a logistic regression showed that the odds ratio of facing a discrimination experience in the dependent group (4.05) was significantly higher compared to the independent group when being transferring out of the room (95% CI=1.50-10.88). The odds ratio of facing a discrimination experience in the elderly with difficulty in hearing (1.25) was significantly higher compared that of to the elderly without difficulty in hearing (95% CI=1.05-1.49). Even with respect to chewing ability, which was significant in Models 1 and 2, the odds ratio of facing a discrimination experience in the elderly with difficulty (1.30) was significantly higher compared to that of the elderly without difficulty (95% CI=1.11-1.53). Moreover, statistical significance was observed in other variables including age, region, religion, education, occupation, satisfaction with economic status, survey year, depression, number of chronic diseases, nutritional status, relationship satisfaction with the spouse, relationship satisfaction with children, and frequency of friends/neighbors visits. These research results indicate that an important strategy for preventing age discrimination is to understand the physical function conditions of the elderly and promote the physical functions of the elderly related to transferring, hearing, and chewing; it is necessary to develop a practical intervention plan that considers these aspects. Furthermore, this study provides basic data for the establishment of policies related to the human rights of and discrimination toward the elderly to improve their quality of life in an aging society. It is anticipated that our research will be used as basic data in elderly welfare policies as well as various programs that maintain the physical functions of the elderly as much as possible and prevent the deterioration of these functions.
