A Study on the Recovery Experiences of Persons with Schizophrenia in Independent Housing

Data were analyzed phenomenologically using Colaizzi’s analysis method to examine the meaning of participants’ recovery through independent living experiences. As a result of the study, it was possible to derive the meanings of participants’ independent living in which meanings were: ‘overcoming loneliness and going into people’, ‘tasting the joy of life’, ‘having a comfortable life’, ‘knocking the door of the world in an isolated life’, ‘conveying the know-how of life’, and ‘dreaming at the end of despair’. In addition, six themes about independent housing experience and recovery experience were derived: ‘One step into the world’, ‘Heart like reeds: An anxious standalone’, ‘As new flesh grows: recovery of everyday life’, ‘Mental illness, facing against its pain’, ‘Living with confidence’, and ‘Dreaming of tomorrow’. Based on these results, ‘Fly on, as the main principal of life’, an essential theme that penetrates the independent living experience and recovery experience of individuals with schizophrenia, was derived. This means that the recovery process of individuals with schizophrenia by individuals becoming the subject of their lives through independent living, where those individuals have been previously accustomed to social prejudice and controlled life in the process of repeated hospitalization. The social welfare implications based on these finding are as follows. First, the government should develop housing support policy and secure public resources for people with mental disorders. Various types of housing services should be provided for people with mental disorders for their independent living. Second, practical efforts should be made for the independence and recovery of people with mental disorders in the field of mental health practice. For this purpose, it is necessary to introduce housing support center for people with mental disorders. In this way, the whole support for the independent life of people with mental disorders should be provided so that they can live in the community without difficulty. Third, practitioner’s effort is necessary to implement practice that centers the recovery of individuals with mental disorders. Based on the whole life of individuals with mental disorders, various practical services are needed so that they can live a life in which they are the subject of their lives.
