Influence of parents' play involvement and playfulness on children' s emotional intelligence and social competence원문보기

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of parents’ play involvement and playfulness on children 's emotional intelligence and social competence. The following research questions were developed and examined. First, do parents’ play involvement influence children’s emotional intelligence and social competence? Second, do parents’ playfulness influence children's emotional intelligence and social competence? Third, are there any differences between fathers’ and mothers’ play involvement and playfulness? This study was conducted with 200 parents of kindergarten children and 200 teachers of the same children from Gyeonggi-do area. To measure parents' play involvement and playfulness, this study used the ‘Inventory of Plays and Play Involvement by Type of Play’ developed by Heeyoung Won (1998) and the 'Adult Playfulness Scale' by Hyeonsook Park (2003), respectively. Also, this study used the ‘Teacher’s Observation Checklist for Emotional Intelligence’ by Byeongnae Lee for measuring children’s emotional intelligence Teachers and the ‘Children’s Social Competence Checklist for Teachers’ developed by Hyewon Lee (2005) for measuring children’s social competence. The collected data were processed for descriptive statistics to examine the distribution of the subjects by gender and age. Also, Cronbach alpha coefficients were calculated to test the reliability of the measurement tools. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the effects of parents’ play involvement and playfulness on children's emotional intelligence and social competence. A 2-sample independent t-test was performed to examine the difference in play involvement and playfulness between fathers and mothers. The results of this study are as follows: First, the functional play of father's play involvement affected infant's emotional intelligence, but did not affect social competence. However, it was found that the instructive play influences emotional intelligence and that the function play influences social competence. Second, playfulness was not a factor affecting emotional intelligence and social competence except for the imagination of father. This means that the characteristics of playfulness that parents have are not influential in changing children 's emotional intelligence and social competence. Third, father participated in constructive play and function play in participation rate of play. Mothers were more likely to participate in instructive play, games, pretense play. There was no difference in physical play between father and mother. The results of this study suggest that it is helpful to improve the emotional intelligence and social competence of the children at home if the parents' will be.
