Policies and standards are being set up to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reduce building energy use. In 2018, energy-saving design standards for buildings were strengthened. However, moisture problems, such as condensation and mold that occur inside the surface of the room and inside the structure still occur. This is due to the lack of understanding of the hygrothermal environment in Korea and the movement of heat and moisture through the building envelope.
The cross-laminated timber (CLT), developed in Europe for the use of low-grade wood, is an engineered wood product (EWP) with high carbon storage and low carbon emissions. CLT wooden houses have significant advantages, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, shortening the construction period, improvement of insulation performance and airtight performance, and realizing high-rise wooden houses. At the time of introducing CLT wooden houses, it is necessary to evaluate the water stability of CLT wooden houses considering Korean hygrothermal environment. Therefore, in this study, the hygrothermal performance of CLT wooden house was evaluated to ensure building energy performance and long-term water stability in the Korean Hygrothermal environment.
As a result of heat transfer analysis through ISO 10211, the linear thermal bridges of the CLT wall were less than light-weight wood frame structure walls in which the structural wood was applied between the insulation. It was more effective to apply the insulation to the outside of the CLT panel. The thermal insulation coefficient was the least when combined externally using self-tapping screws on all connections between CLT. The self-tapping screw applied internally overlaps with the geometric thermal bridges, resulting in large thermal bridges.
The plan of the CLT wooden house for the evaluation of building energy performance is presented by referring to the thermal bridge of the CLT connection and the case of the CLT apartment house. The demand for cooling and heating energy of CLT wooden houses with excellent airtightness was reduced by about 15% compared with the light-weight wooden houses. The results of building energy performance evaluation of CLT wooden houses according to domestic climate conditions indicate that energy-saving design standards of buildings should be modified.
The hygrothermal environmental zone was derived for 20 domestic regions to evaluate the hygrothermal performance of the CLT wooden houses. The thicknesses of the insulation applied to the CLT wall and the CLT roof are presented in accordance with the Thermal Environmental Zone. Long-term water stability was evaluated according to the hygrothermal environmental zone, the type of insulation, and applicability of the vapor barrier, vapor retarder, and high-performance vapor retarder. As results, the CLT wall and the CLT roof were evaluated to minimize the moisture problem when applying extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation with high vapor resistance, and the vapor retarder applied on the roof proved to cause mold germination risk of XPS insulation. In addition, the moisture content of the insulation was evaluated to considering the increased thermal conductivity depending on the moisture content. The application of XPS insulation was able to ensure high insulation performance.
In this study, the recommendations of the CLT wall and the CLT roof were obtained for building energy performance considering thermal bridges and long-term moisture stability according to the hygrothermal environmental zone at the time of introducing CLT wooden house. I hope that the final result will be utilized as a guide for the design of Korean CLT wooden houses. In addition, I expect that this series of processes will be extended to the design method of building envelope with hygrothermal environment.
