The investigation was initiated to study the public sewage treatment plant operated by the A2O method in the city of mid-western area of Kyeonggi, Korea. The multivariate statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the operational conditions based on the whole year of 2017 operational data. The simulation for optimization operation using GPS-X was also performed. The near future operational conditions in accordance with increasing population could be predicted for changes in influent flow rate and water quality concentration. Therefore, the size of operational treatment plant could be expanded as a result of GPS-X. As a result of seasonal analysis, the discharge water quality was greatly affected by the season. Especially, spring discharge period was higher than other seasons in terms of BOD, COD, SS, T-N and T-P. In the result of the correlation analysis, the discharge water of T-N was sensitive to the temperature change. In the simulation sensitivity analysis using GPS-X, the variables affecting the A2O method were as follows: In the anoxic tank, the following variables were critical with the yield of microorganisms, phosphorus uptake coefficient, microorganism kill rate, and microorganism maximum growth rate. On the other hand of aerobic tank, maximum growth rate of independent nutrient microorganism, maximum sedimentation rate of primary and secondary sedimentation tank were critical to the operation. The lower the activity of the microorganisms was caused by the lower the water temperature. In the reaction tank, the reaction, therefore, the efficiency was decreased and the water quality of the discharged water was increased. The results of simulation tests showed that longer SRT and HRT were required to prevent the microbial activity from being reduced. The result of simulation showed that it is necessary to increase the capacity of the reaction tank (primary settling tank, reactor, secondary settling tank) by about 30% in 2020. It is not easy to experiment by modifying the operating condition of actual sewage treatment plant to lab scale condition. In order to improve the operation efficiency of the sewage treatment plant, lab scale experiments should be conducted to find suitable operating conditions and to verify the results. In this study, optimal operating conditions of sewage treatment plants using A2O method were derived from multivariate statistical analysis, GPS-X modeling, and lab scale experiment results. Based on the results, the operating conditions of the currently operating sewage treatment plant were analyzed and the water quality and the size of the sewage treatment plant could be predicted according to future population growth.
