This study is a critical review of Nepotism, which is one of the deep-seated problems of Korean society. This study regarded Bungdang(朋黨) in the Chosun Dynasty as the origin of Nepotism and focused on exploring ways to overcome the culture of Nepotism in modern society. The related concepts of Nepotism are organized and the types of it and problems are explored. To do this, the previous research results were analyzed and synthesized from a sociological, regional, organizational, and cultural interdisciplinary perspective.
This study analyzed the principle of connection from a historical perspective and differentiated it from the precedent research. A new concept has been presented for nepotism, which is defined as an exclusive rent-seeking act, that hampers the integration of democratic societies and reduces social well-being by asymmetry of information. Historical roots of Nepotism are found in the political party strife during the mid-chosun period and analyzed the nepotistic characteristics that emerged during the division of the political party. The characteristic of the Nepotism in the history of party strife was the selfishness of one’s own party in the fight for hegemony with sovereign and subjects in the weak king and strong retainer. Second, it was a culture of family connection to maintain the status of the house by combining the royal family and the maternal family. From a historical perspective, the implications of Nepotism are social ills that must be eradicated because it prevents social development by causing inequality, even though there are some positive factors
In conclusion, a measure was proposed to overcome the harmful effect of Nepotism. First, it should not allow a small elite to monopolize political power. Second, we need to set up an education system that can reject academic factionalism and develop practical core competences. Third, we need to further promote blind recruitment methods that fairly employ human resources. Fourth, social awareness of jobs should be changed away from Confucian perspective on occupation. Since the Korean War, Korea has suffered a national crisis and has been running for reconstruction. Accordingly, cultural lag phenomenon, which can not keep up with the development of material culture, is reflected in democratic political culture and is in the transitional phase of moving from power-oriented politics to civil democracy and society. The mixture of traditional values and modern values continues to lead to the continuous rise of nepotistic behaviors, which need to be established as new values. In order for our society to develop, social and economic systems must be fair. It is time for us to think together so that we can set up a rational set of values instead of a nepotistic one.
