As the basis of the semiconductor industry representing South Korea, the semiconductor equipment industry has faced a supply chain crisis due to its inferior industrial structure, uncertain investment environment, and weakening production cost competitiveness. This study set out to search for plans for vertical collaboration in the semiconductor equipment industry to overcome the crisis. This study based its approach according to two major research objectives to understand a vertical collaboration model: first, the study would examine the supply chain structure of the semiconductor equipment industry and analyze its structural characteristics through network analysis; and second, it would develop a vertical collaboration model for the industry to empirically demonstrate causal relations among vertical collaboration between large, small- & medium-sized companies (SMEs), core competency, relation capital, and operational performance of SMEs. The network analysis results were as follows: first, the semiconductor equipment industry was in the four-stage PUME (parts-units-modulesequipments) structure of supply chain by function. Its supply chain structure by process moved from design through part processing, module & unit assembly, and equipment assembly to production for clients. It was a complicated structure with many trade stages. Secondly, as for the structural characteristics of network analysis, the network consisted of 1,673 nodes and 2,591 links (edges). The network density was very low at 0.0009 in a structure of many trade stages including eight stages in the maximum connection distance and 4.49 stages on average. The results of connection centrality, medium centrality, and page rank as the indicators of status characteristics show that the top two corporations representing the South Korean semiconductor industry were at the center of supply chain. The semiconductor equipment module manufacturers appeared across all indicators, serving important roles in supply chain. The empirical analysis results were as follows: first, vertical collaboration activities between purchasing and supplying corporations had statistically significant positive (+) effects on the core competency of SMEs. Fair trade of vertical collaboration, however, had no such effects on the core competency of SMEs. Second, vertical collaboration activities between purchasing and supplying companies had no statistically significant positive (+) impact on relation capital, but fair trade of vertical collaboration had such impact on it. Third, the core competency of SMEs had statistically significant positive (+) influences on relation capital, which had in turn indirect effects between vertical collaboration, core competency, and operational performance of SMEs. In addition, the core competency of SMEs had indirect effects between vertical collaboration activities and relation capital. Finally, there were no differences in the paths of the vertical collaboration model according to the vendor position. When the paths were distinguished, differences were found in the path from cooperation activities to core competency, the path from core competency to relation capital, and the path from relation capital to operational performance. There were no differences in the paths of the vertical collaboration model according to the type of trade, either. When the paths were distinguished, however, differences were observed in the path from cooperation activities to core competency, the path from core competency to relation capital, and the path from relation capital to operational performance. The present study shed light on the structure and characteristics of supply chain in the semiconductor equipment industry, made an academic and policy contribution by analyzing empirically and testing hypotheses in a vertical collaboration model, and provided implications to the practitioners in the industry by searching for plans for vertical collaboration.
