A Study on the Educational ministry for the integration of newcomers of Small Korean Church

Abstract
In Korea, approximately 3,000 churches—five percent of all churches—close down each year. This can be seen as a crisis of the Korean church, which means a crisis of small churches because 85% of Korean churches are small churches. In addition, most of the churches that close are new churches or financially dependent churches. Moreover, the survival of small churches is directly related to church growth. While small churches with few resources struggle, larger churches with both material and human resources are able to sustain themselves and even grow. The essential requirement for resolving this crisis of small churches is the integration of newcomers into the church. While all pastors strongly desire that newcomers be fully integrated into the life of the church, this should take an even higher priority for smaller churches. All small churches make efforts to integrate newcomers, however, most research on the integration of newcomers is modeled on larger churches that have sufficient growth and may not apply to small churches. Therefore, a wide range of practical, small-church specific strategies for integrating newcomers is needed. The solution to the problem of the physical growth of Korean churches should be found within the essence of the church. Therefore, educational ministry is proposed as the location of the solution. Educational ministry is an essential aspect of pastoral care, applying educational principles to the primary ministries of the church—worship (Leiturgia), preaching (Kerygma), service (Diakonia), fellowship (Koinonia), and education (Didache). Therefore, as a solution to the crisis of the Korean church, this study proposes practical newcomer-integration strategies for small Korean churches based on an educational ministry approach.
