(Children's Depression Inventory, ...

This study was conducted to verify effects of the dance/movement psychotherapy using Effort factors of Laban on depression, anxiety and self-expression of children from munticultural families. The subjects were 20 3th and 5th graders attending in an elementary school, from multicultural families organized by international marriages, among children using local child centers located at G-gu and S-gu, and a multicultural family support center at D-gu, Seoul-si. Each of experiment and control group consists of 10 children, respectively, and children in the former received the dance/movement psychotherapy, while those in the latter did not. The research tools included Children's Depression Inventory(CDI), Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale(RCMAS) and Assertive Behavior Assessment Scale(ABAS). The dance/movement psychotherapy has been carried out for 70 minutes per a session, twice a week, during a total of 8 sessions, since October, 2018. The whole session was divided into three stages: early, middle and late stage. At the early stage, children were encouraged to form the rapport with the group, by interacting with others through circular movement and relaxing their physical and psychological tension. At the middle stage, they attempted to recognize and express their emotions derived from experiences of 8 Effort factors, through movement and images. At the late stage, they were allowed to extend their movement by perceiving individual movement patterns and escaping from habituated movement patterns and recognize and express emotions they newly felt. Before the start and after the end of the whole program, a pre- and a post-test were conducted, respectively, to verify the statistical significance. The findings showed that the dance/movement psychotherapy using Effort factors of Laban has significant effects on depression, anxiety and self-expression of children from multicultural families. So, it can be interpreted that a variety of movement experience, expression and extension using Effort have positive effects on emotions of children from multicultural families and the promotion of self-expression, by encouraging them to express their own thoughts and emotions, through movement, a kind of nonverbal intervention.
