It is important to utilize renewable energy more efficiently and stably for accelerating the sustainable energy economy. Efficient and stable utilization of renewable energy strongly depends on the development of energy conversion and storage technologies in environmentally friendly way such as hydro, wind, solar power, etc. Electrochemical water splitting is one of the most promising way to convert electric energy into hydrogen energy, which can be easily stored and used, thanks to its high efficiency and simplicity. In order to further enhance energy conversion efficiency, noble metal based catalysts (Pt, RuO2, etc.) are often used to lower an overpotential and thus increase the reaction rate. However, the rareness and high price of noble metals limits rapid growth of renewable energy economy. Hence, it is urgently necessary to develop alternatives for the costly noble metal based catalysts. In this dissertation, I have developed non-noble metal-based catalyst materials that can achieve performance equivalent to that of a noble metal-based catalyst via nanostructuring and nanocompositing strategies to control catalytic activity of transition metal-based catalysts.
In PART Ⅰ, transition metal sulfides with partially amorphized surface structure was synthesized and their electrochemical catalytic property was studied. Partial amorphization was carried out using electrochemical activation (ECA) process. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity was significantly improved by inducing high numbers of crystalline-amorphous interface on the surface.
In PART Ⅱ, transition metal borides were synthesized with high surface area and porous structure via templated ion exchange method. Extrinsic dopant was deposited onto the surface of as-synthesized catalyst using atomic layer deposition (ALD). The deposition of extrinsic element improved the adsorption and charge mobility on the surface by incorporating extrinsic elements and the control of physicochemical properties at the interface. The electrochemical characteristics of the catalyst was optimized by controlling deposition conditions such as atmosphere, temperature, and time of the post-heat treatment process. Finally, an overpotential at the anode of electrochemical water splitting cell was substantially lowered resulting in high efficiency for hydrogen production.
In conclusion, the general characteristics of the catalytic material for hydrogen production have been studied, based on the electrochemical model, the theory of molecular adsorption, and the charge transfer mechanism on the materials’ surface.
