This study was conducted to identify the effect of the group art therapy on the hand function and happiness of the elderly with senile disease, the subjects of study are as in the following. First, what kind of effect the group art therapy made on the hand function of the elderly with senile disease. Second, what kind of effect the group art therapy made on happiness of elderly with senile disease. Third, How could the hand function and happiness of them change during the process of the therapy. The targets of this study were 12 old peopople who needed a long-term care and were elderly with senile disease from the day and night care center. in S-si, Gyeonggi-do. And we put 6 people into the experimental group and put the rest of them into the control group. People from the experimental group got the group art treatment and people from the control group got nothing. In this study, we used some study tools that were called ‘Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test’ which was made to measure the hand function consisted of hand gestures in daily life made by Jebsen in 1969 and ‘The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire’ made by Arygle(2002) and adapted by Hill and Seung Yeon Heo(2009) and revised easily by Mi Jeong Song(2014). The collected data were analysed by using SPSS 20.0 statistical programme and to verify the homogeneity about the score of happiness and hand function of people from the experimental group and control group, We conducted Mann-Whitney U test before the group art treatment programme began and we also used Cronbach alpha for trust of criterion of questions. And after the group art treatment programme, we conducted Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test to analyse the effect so we compared and analysed the score result of happiness and hand function of peopole from the experimental group and control group. Finally, To see the process of changing happiness and hand function of geriatric patients during the group art treatment programme, we analysed the session. The result of this study was in the following. First, The group art therapy was very effective to improve the hand function of elderly with senile disease, The entire function of nondominant hand(z=-2.20, p<.05) and the entire function of dominant hand(z=-2.20, p<.05) all showed a meaningful change statistically. The nondominant hand that belongs to sub lists of hand function like turning the card over(z=-2.02, p<.05), piling chess up(z=-2.06, p<.05), moving the big and light things(z=-2.00, p<.05), moving the big and heavy things(z=-2.23, p<.05), And the dominant hand also showed moving the big and light things(z=-2.03, p<.05), moving the big and heavy things(z=-2.21, p<.05) which means the meaningful change as well. Second, The group art therapy was effective to increase happiness of elderly with senile disease(z=-2.00, p<.05). Third, During the group art therapy, the elderly with senile disease showed some statistical change and qualitative change of happiness and hand function. They experienced some sensory stimulation by using various media during the art process and they did some sophisticated work repeatedly and it helped their fine motor skill so their work level improved and they even focused on the art work better and their working speed was faster. Also, they felt like they were helpless and had low self-esteem and were hard to feel satisfied with anything before but as the group art therapy began, they were really active and interested in it and even some people supported and sympathised with each other and they were happy and laughed because they felt a sense of accomplishment in their work. So, it showed a positive change in terms of happiness as well. These results are based on verification that the group art therapy had a positive effect on hand function and happiness of the elderly with senile disease, By this study, I hope the range of art therapy will expand to physical and psychological therapy targeting the elderly with senile disease.
