This paper analyzed the emergence patterns and usage patterns of new words and buzzwords in Japan by analyzing the words related to ‘U-Can Japan New Words and Buzzwords Awards’ in Japan in the period from 2006 to 2017. Specifically, focusing on the words awarded and nominated for the ‘U-Can Japan New Words and Buzzwords Awards’ from 2006 to 2017 on the ‘official website of Jiyu Kokumin sha’, this paper analyzed the socio-cultural and linguistic characteristics of new words and buzzwords in Japan during the last 12 years.
This paper consists of 5 chapters in total. Chapter 1 presents the background and research purpose of this study and outlines previous studies related to definition and categories as well as classification and characteristics of new words and buzzwords. Chapter 2 presents the subjects and methods of research. Chapter 3 explores the socio-cultural characteristics of new words and buzzwords through the analysis of the characteristics of topics as well as the analysis of the introduction of other cultures. The results can be summarized as follows:
First, as for the characteristics of topics of new words and buzzwords, topics were divided into 6 categories of ‘culture, art, education, philosophy, society, and nature’; and the number of words by year and category were presented. The result shows that the number of new words and buzzwords belonging to ‘society’ category were the highest, accounting for 346 (53.8%) out of 643 words in total. The second highest number of new words and buzzwords belonged to ‘culture’ category with 244 words (38%). Meanwhile, each category was classified in detail and the number of words for each year was suggested. ‘Culture’ category was classified into 4 items: ‘mass media, sports, lifestyle, and building’. ‘Art’ category was classified into 3 categories: ‘music, film, and art’. ‘Education’ category was classified into 3 categories: ‘scholarship, science, and courtesy’. ‘Philosophy’ category was classified into 3 categories: ‘ideology, religion, and faith’. ‘Society’ category was classified into 9 categories: ‘politics, accident and event, life and welfare, current status, economy, criticism and protest, military and international, institution, and law’. ‘Nature’ category was classified into 3 categories: ‘weather, environment, and astronomy’. Among these, the item with the highest number of words was ‘mass media’ in ‘culture’ category, with 150 words. The item with the second highest number of words was ‘politics’ in ‘society’ category, with 93 words.
Next, examination of the changes in the use of new words and buzzwords by year shows that new words and buzzwords related to ‘culture’ category tended to decrease, and new words and buzzwords related to ‘society’ category tended to increase. Changes in other categories were not regular, and a great number of new words and buzzwords appeared in one specific year. There were cases where the original meaning of new words and buzzwords was changed to refer to different objects; the number of such words was 137 (21.3%).
Lastly, as for the use of new words and buzzwords derived from other cultures, the sources of new words and buzzwords were first classified by country, which was classified again into 4 regions: ‘Asian region’, ‘European and American region’, ‘African region’, and ‘organization’. The number of new words and buzzwords derived from other cultures was 100 (15.6%). Among them, the number of new words and buzzwords derived from ‘European and American region’ was the greatest with 84 words, of which the number of new words and buzzwords from America was the greatest with 57 words.
Chapter 4 analyzes the linguistic characteristics of new words and buzzwords from 4 perspectives: ‘pronunciation type’, ‘word type’, ‘word structure’ and ‘types of notation’. The results can be summarized as follows:
First, ‘pronunciation type’ was classified into ‘paronym’ and ‘replacement of reading method’ to examine the usage patterns. And ‘paronym’ was subdivided into 2 types: ‘native word type’ and ‘English・foreign word type’. ‘Replacement of reading method’ was subdivided into 3 types: ‘replacement of on-yomi (Chinese reading of kanji) with kun-yomi (Japanese reading of kanji)’, ‘replacement of Japanese with English’, and ‘others’. As for ‘paronym’, the number of words in ‘English・foreign word type’ was the highest with 156 words. As for ‘replacement of reading method’, the number of words on ‘replacement of Japanese with English’ was the highest with 96 words.
‘Word type’ was divided into ‘single kind of words’ and ‘hybrid words’. ‘Single kind of words’ was classified into ‘native words’, ‘kanji’, ‘English words’, and ‘other words’. ‘Hybrid words’ were classified into ’kanji+native words’, ‘English words+kanji’, ‘English words+native words’, ‘English words+kanji+native words’, and ’including other words’. The number of ‘single kind of words’ was 357 (55.8%), and the number of ‘hybrid words’ was 283 (44.2%). This confirms that ‘single kind of words’ are used more than hybrid words. In ‘single kind of words’, the number of ‘kanji’ was the highest with 143 words; in ‘hybrid words’, the number of ‘kanji+native words’ was the highest with 145 words.
The usage patterns of ‘word structure’ was examined from 3 perspectives: ‘simple words・synthesized words’, ‘abbreviations’, and ‘other words’. In ‘simple words・synthesized words’, the number of simple words was 62 and the number of synthesized words was 578, which shows more synthesized words are used than simple words. ‘Synthesized words’ were classified into ‘compound words’, ‘derivatives’, ‘re-synthesized words’, ‘reduplications’, and ‘sentence’. Among them, the number of ‘compound words’ was the highest with 196 words. ‘Abbreviations’ were divided into ‘abbreviation of initials’ and ‘abbreviation of ordinary vocabulary’ to examine usage patterns. ‘Other words’ were classified into 5 types of formation: ‘analogical words’, ‘imitative words’, ‘mixed words’, ‘anastrophe’, and ‘types of symbol’.
As for ‘types of notation’, ‘types of notation’ of new words and buzzwords were divided into ‘general types of notation’ and ‘special types of notation’. ‘General types of notation’ include notation of ‘kanji’ as ‘Chinese characters’, notation of ‘native words’ as ‘hiragana’ or ‘Chinese characters’, or as ‘Chinese characterz+hiragana’, notation of ‘foreign words’ as ‘katakana’. ‘Special types of notation’ include ‘native words→katakana’, ‘kanji→katakana’, ‘kanji+native words→katakana’, ‘kanji→hiragana’, ‘English words→hiragana’, ‘English words→alphabet’, and ‘other words→alphabet’. According to analysis, the number of words in ‘general types of notation’ was 513, and the number of words in ‘special types of notation’ was 127, which shows that the former is 4 times more than the latter.
Chapter 6 summarizes the results of this study and presents future tasks.
This study analyzed the emergence patterns and usage patterns of new words and buzzwords, focusing on words related to ‘U-Can Japan New Words and Buzzwords Awards’ during the period from 2006 to 2017. Through this, the socio-cultural and linguistic characteristics of new words and buzzwords were identified. However, since this study was mainly limited to quantitative analysis, the qualitative analysis needs to be supplemented in the future to comprehend the characteristics of new words and buzzwords more closely.
