This study compares and analyzes the awareness of teachers on violation of teacher’s authorities and plans for preventing such violations. It aims at providing basic materials that can be used for ways to address issues on violation of teacher’s authorities by investigating the status of violations of teacher’s authorities. The research problems according to the purpose of this study are as follows.
Research Problem 1. What is the awareness of kindergarten teachers and parents on the violation of teacher’s authorities and prevention of such violations? Research Problem 2. What is the status of violation of teacher’s authorities experienced by kindergarten teachers?
This study was conducted on 201 kindergarten teachers working in public and private kindergartens in Gyeonggi-do and 197 parents of kindergarten students (3-5 years old). Questionnaires on the awareness of teacher’s authorities of kindergarten teachers by Yang Da-gyeong and Lee Yeon-seung (2016) and questionnaires for parents on the status of violation of teacher’s authorities and institutional improvement methods by Choi Seon-ok, Yeom Bo-ah, Lee Jong-heon and Kim Yeon-jae (2016) were revised and supplemented for use as questionnaires for this study. For awareness on violation of teacher’s authorities and plans for preventing violation of teacher’s authorities were asked to teachers and parents as common questions, while the status of violation of teacher’s authorities was examined only for teachers. SPSS 23.0 was used for data analysis to conduct frequency, percentage and χ2 verification.
Upon examining the results of research problem 1, awareness of kindergarten teachers and parents on the violation of teacher’s authorities and plans for preventing the violation of teacher’s authorities showed statistically significant differences in seven out of ten questions. First, it was found that more teachers heard about the violation of teacher’s authorities compared to parents. Furthermore, for awareness on the violation of teacher’s authorities on site and among current faculty, teachers answered that it was ‘severe’, while parents answered as ‘average’ or ‘not serious’. The field in which the most violation of teacher’s authorities were found to be ‘rights to labor and rest’ for both teachers and parents. On the awareness of subjects of violation of teacher’s authorities, teachers answered ‘persons related to young children’, while parents answered that ‘manager’s were the subjects. For the main cause of violation of teacher’s authorities, both teachers and parents answered ‘lack of institutional device for ensuring teacher’s authorities’, while for awareness on the most common type of violation of teacher’s authorities, both teachers and parents answered ‘unjust behavior (verbal abuse, threats, violence)’. Second, for appropriate measures when violations of teacher’s authorities occur, teachers and parents both said, ‘report to managers and then follow instructions’. For the reason of not responding to violations of teacher’s authorities, both teachers and parents answered, ‘concerns on unfair treatment after the response’. For measures taken on parents or guardians who violated teacher’s authorities, teachers answered ‘no measures taken’ and parents answered ‘others - not applicable’. For the appropriateness on measures taken against parents or guardians who violated teacher’s authorities, teachers answered ‘not appropriate’, while more than half of parents answered ‘not applicable’ followed by ‘yes’. Third, for measures to prevent violation of teacher’s authorities, both teachers and parents answered ‘efforts to improve expertise’ for both teachers and parents’. For prerequisites, both teachers and parents answered, ‘social mood that respects teachers’. For measures to prevent and protect against violation of teacher’s authorities, both teachers and parents answered, ‘systematic supplementation and protection for teacher’s authorities’.
When examining the results according to research problem 2, it was found that kindergarten teachers had direct or indirect experience of violation of teacher’s authorities at the kindergarten they worked in over the past year, while there were more cases of indirect experience than direct experiences. Furthermore, a few answered that they experienced physical assault or sexual harassment. First, for the number of direct and indirect violations of teacher’s authorities at the kindergarten of employment over the past year, over half of teachers answered that they had such experience at least one time. Second, of the types of violations of teacher’s authorities, for direct and indirect experiences, over half answered that it was ‘class interference’. Third, in the seven questions on the status type of violation of teacher’s authority (class interference, profanity, threat, cyber bullying, violence over the phone, damage and destruction of property, sexual harassment, physical violence, damage and destruction of personal property of teachers), it was found that kindergarten teachers had more indirect experiences than direct experiences. Fourth, among the status types of violation of teacher’s authorities, the direct and indirect experiences in ‘damage and destruction of property’, ‘sexual harassment’, ‘physical assault’, and ‘damage and destruction to the personal property of teachers’ were found to be very rare. In conclusion, the results of this study imply that measures should be established against violation of teacher’s authorities to improve the quality of childhood education through awareness of kindergarten teachers and parents on the violation of teacher’s authorities and the status on the violation of teacher’s authorities.
