Host specificity and feeding activity of herbivorous insects in temperate broad-leaved forest of Mt.

Insects are the most abundant and diverse animal group in the terrestrial ecosystem, and herbivorous insects comprise one-quarter of all insect species. The diversity of insects is closely correlated with the diversity of plant species. In the present study, the level of leaf damage created by leaf-chewing (chewer) insects was investigated on 0.1 ha plots in the temperate forest of Mt. Jirisan National Park, South Korea. Lepidopteran caterpillars are a common herbivorous insect, and, in this study, the diversity of lepidopteran caterpillars was verified and host-plant specificity of caterpillars was examined. In the study plots, mean leaf damage from chewer insects was 11.2%. The level of damage was higher in the low plant diversity plot (site 1) than in the high plant diversity plot (site 2). Plant density-related variables, such as the basal area of host plants in study plots were positively correlated with the leaf damage level by chewers. In the second part of the study, 32 species of host plants belonging to 22 genera of 21 families were observed, and 738 individual caterpillars belonging to 223 species of 23 lepidopteran families were collected from two study sites. A number of caterpillars were collected from Fagaceae (Quercus spp.) and Betulaceae (Carpinus spp.) trees. The caterpillar species mix was more specialized at site 2 than site 1. The results suggest that plant diversity is negatively correlated with the level of leaf damage and the number of specialist herbivorous insects (associational resistance). The results of this study provide information on leaf damage created by herbivorous insects and a dataset reflecting the diversity of host plants and lepidopteran caterpillar species in a temperate broad-leaved forest. Furthermore, the results can be used to assess the level of host-plant specialization among herbivorous insects, thereby facilitating further elucidation of the associations between insects and plants.
