A study on the effect of using innovation methodology on employee's innovation DNA development and corporate performance : focusing on six sigma and design thinking methodology원문보기

Modern companies continue to differentiate their products and services for sustainable management. These activities of companies are called management innovation activities, and companies are making various efforts to discover creative talents as a driving force of the innovation activities. When the size of a company is small or the business is in the early stages, most of these innovations are driven by a small number of managers. However, as the scale grows and the business history grows longer, all innovations cannot be achieved by relying on a small number of executives. As a result, companies began to explore ways to train more creative and innovative personnel. In general, creative talents are thought to be innate and right-handed persons with the developed right brain and excellent intuitive sensibility. However, previous studies have shown that human Intelligence quotient (IQ) can be inherited, but individual creativity can be developed and reinforced through learning after birth (Marvin Reznikoff, 1973). In the research on the subject of creativity and innovativeness of business people, Dyer et al. (2009, 2011) said recently that Innovator’s DNA is different from that of ordinary people and can be developed and strengthened at the acquired level. They also suggested ideas and methods to strengthen them. However, companies have been using various innovation methodologies in order to strengthen management innovation activities before research on innovative people and research on Innovation DNA of organizations began. Starting with QC in the 1970s, TQM in 1980s, Six Sigma in the 1990s, and TRIZ are the representative innovation methodologies, and companies are continuously deriving innovative results by using these methodologies. Then, we cannot help but wonder how the various innovation methods being used as the main methodology of innovation activity in the enterprise actually affect the innovation ability of the corporate members and what kind of causal relationship between these and the innovation performance and the management performance. Thus, through research on the design thinking methodology that began to attract attention due to its usability in companies as interest in creative talent increases in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution and the Six Sigma Methodology, which is one of the most commonly used in companies, we studied how the utilization of each methodology affects the development of the innovation DNA of employees who are the subject of corporate innovation and how these methodologies and innovation DNA are related to innovation performance and business performance. To this end, we asked the employees of medium-sized companies and large companies in Korea whether they have used the innovation methodology, measured the innovation DNA of employees and surveyed the impact of these on corporate performance. The results of research showed that Six Sigma success factors that can assess a company’s level of settlement and utilization of Six Sigma methodology have a positive impact on the innovation DNA development of employees and discovery DNA among innovation DNA showed a mediating effect between Six Sigma success factors and innovation performance. In the case of design thinking methodology, we have identified the effect of the characteristics of design thinking on innovation DNA development and corporate performance. As a result, the characteristics of design thinking showed a very strong causal relationship with the innovation DNA. However, the mediating effect of the innovation performance was not identified, and unlike the Six Sigma success factors, the characteristics of design thinking showed a strong positive (+) effect directly on the Business performance The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of two innovation methodologies on the innovation DNA of employees in companies and the degree of influence on the innovation performance and business performance of the company. Through this study, we have established the mechanism of innovation in the enterprise as follows: Innovation uses innovation methodologies to develop innovation DNA of employees. Six Sigma methodology contributes to innovation performance through innovation DNA, which has a positive (+) effect on business performance. The design thinking methodology has a positive (+) effect on the development of innovation DNA, does not affect the innovation performance of the company, and has a positive effect on the business performance directly. However, this study was limited to the survey of variables to identify the level of utilization and settling of innovation methodology in a situation where each innovation methodology is operationally different from the process. In the future, research needs to be carried out to identify the causal relationship between the use of innovation methodology and the type of innovation in innovation DNA development depending on the time spent in each company by specifying variables input for the establishment of innovation methodologies for employees.
