The purpose of this study was to improve antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of Moringa oleifera leaf extract through bioconversion process. The antimicrobial activity of moringa-fermented solution (MFS) against Propionibacterium acne (P. acne) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) was investigated. In addition, the degree of irritations was evaluated by human skin patch test when MFS was applied. MFS-based soap was prepared and bactericidal test. The antimicrobial activities of MFS were measured using gram-negative E. coli and P. acne. Growth of E. coli and P. acne was inhibited by 40% and 47% at day 5, and by 50% and 55% at day 15, respectively, by MFS. MFS of 40mg/mL showed antioxidative activity by 75% of vitamin C, and its activity was increased in a concentration–dependent manner. MFS did not show any irritation to volunteers in clinical patch test. MFS-based soap showed the bactericidal activities by 89.0%, 99.9%, 99.9% and 99.9% against E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) respectively. In conclusion, the Moringa oleifera leaf extract prepared by bioconversion process showed higher antimicrobial and antioxidant activities than normal extraction. Furthermore, these results suggest that MFS may be used as promising natural materials in the field of cosmetic research and industry. The bioconversion process can be widely used as an efficient extraction method for cosmetic resources.
