This study aims to shed light on the gender stereotypes that have been unconsciously accepted by the general public. In doing so, this study analyzes 3 Disney movies since the late 2000’s. Disney animation is one of the leading figure in the cultural industry. On top of that, Disney animation’s influence is immeasurably huge due to the fact that its contents are widely spread throughout the world and being watched globally. Although it is obvious that compared to Disney movies before 2000s, main characters in Disney movies in the late 2000s had more various personality, behavior, and values, and they showed improvements such as adventurous women who escaped from gender stereotyping appearing in animations, but this study tries to verify that they are still not free from the skillfully hidden gender stereotypes.
Considering the influence of animated films on young infants, it seems that we need to consider these concerns seriously. Animated films, which most children come to watch during their childhood, have a huge impact on their formation of values and socialization process. For example, children who watch animated films will learn indirectly about the individual role and hierarchical position of each individual in society. That is, we can say that animation movies which belong to audiovisual materials that children commonly watch give impact on socialization process of children, and this impact continuously exercises its influence on individuals, following their life cycle.
Therefore, this study intends to conduct a qualitative analysis of the three Disney movies; 'The Princess and the Frog', 'Rapunzel', and 'Frozen' which were made after the late 2000s. The reasons for selecting these movies are as follows: First, all three films were commercially successful. Second, as the films are all about expressing the life of the adults, they convey the feelings that represents the older generation to infants and children. Third, all three movies are skillfully hiding gender stereotypes.
This study would like to proceed qualitative analysis of animation movies in two methods. First, study analyzes narrative structure based on “Actant theory” of Greimas. There are following advantages when using “Actant theory” of Greimas. It can show the roles and position of male and female visually within narrative structure. Moreover, it shows gender stereotypes that are stored in narrative structure, thus giving us an insight about the mechanism in which females are depreciated.
Second, the analysis about body technique of female characters who appear in Disney movies will be done based on Body Theory of Bourdieu. Bourdieu understands the body as physiological construct and a part of class symbol, and he says that we learn certain patterns of behavior in the process of body growth according to class. Furthermore, Bourdieu evaluated that a learned body is indivisible from power and is essential for recreation and intensification of social inequality. In this context, the study would like to present that the bodily properties of the female characters featured in Disney films are represented in a distorted way by the gaze of those who have power, mainly male.
This research has the purpose of expressing concern about male-dominated values that are skillfully maintained in modern society in which gender stereotypes are thought to be diluted considerably. Moreover, it's expected that we can get clues through this study about how the animation movies should be produced so that the children who are the main viewers of animation movies can create proper gender concepts. In the long term, we expect that this study will become the foundation stone of making the society free from gender stereotypes.
