This study was a narrative inquiry containing the autobiographical experience of this research inquirer, and the inquirer intended to explore the role of drawing as a transitional object in art therapy and the value of self-understanding of an art therapist through artwork. Thus, the inquirer as a client asked three inquiry questions to explore self-understanding through the art therapy and drawings as the transitional objects in the process of finding the significance of art in life. First, what did the experience about “drawings” mean to the inquirer as the transitional object? Second, what was the significance of the experience to the inquirer? Third, what was the value of this inquiry? To effectively represent the autobiographical and experienced inquiry contents, this study adopted a narrative inquiry method. The inquiry performed fifteen art therapy sessions from October 2018 to January 2019. 500 pages of recorded sessions were transcribed verbatim and 20 drawings were collected. Additionally, journals of autobiographical writing and another 20 drawings, which were created before the therapy, were gathered. Reconstructed experience stories composed of five themes according to the time stream of the therapy process. First, “My drawings” depicted a story about finding the desire for recognition which was revealed in the meaning of the art from the life of past experiences. Second, “Find the reason of loneliness” represented the course of finding the reason for loneliness from self-alienation and self-blame which originated from the desire of recognition. Third, “Drawings to me” tried to expose the value of drawings as transitional objects in the experience story, which was about confronting “myself” through communication with the drawings. Fifth and sixth, “Talking with drawings” and “Immersing into drawings” described attempts to communicate with drawings and was finalized with a story of personal recognition towards the art by immersing into drawings was amended. In this process, the inquirer realized that “the person who should stand by my side is me” and produced a signification that communicating with and immersing into drawings became the process of “recovering a relationship with drawings”, meaning skeptical relationships transformed into trusting relationships. The inquiry revealed an experience of understanding “loneliness” to recover the relationship with drawings, and the inquirer recognized that drawings could become a transitional object which linked the inner-mind and external reality. In addition, the inquirer learnt that the art therapist should become an intermediator, helping the communication of a client with drawings to experience healing and growth through art therapy. The experience of healing and growth was unique and worthy and was the direct experience for power of art therapy and drawings. Therefore, the inquirer desires for therapists not only to share the value of their experience about self-understanding by the power of drawings and art works, but also to be encouraged by the journey of self-understanding through art works.
