This research aims at verifying the effect of the creative activity of an subject expanding the intermediate subject on the reduction of problematic acts and linguistic and overall development of a child through the autonomous expression activity of a initial stage sensing medium targeted to pervasive development disordered children.
The subject of this study was a development-retarded 7-year old elementary 1st grader, rarely communicated, and emotionally unstable, so difficult to control, who complained about s serious difficult in social adaptation. Hereby this researcher conducted art therapy by 40 minutes a week Jul. 2009 through Jan. 2012, in which carried out counselling with parents for 10 minutes.
This researcher approached the developmental theory of D. W. Winnicott from a therapeutic view to the study cases, conducted art therapy non-directively to facilitate the subject child's psychological stability, and provided an environmental frame easy to select an early-stage sensory medium.
Hereby, this researcher examined into focusing on the therapist's observation and assessment to verify that overall development was affected, such as the emotional stability, behavioral change, verbal development of the subject shown through the activation of sensory functions and the production of developmental process, and referred to the reports of parents' counselling on the change of adaptable acts in school. Also for qualitative assessment, conducted a pre and post Korean version CBCL 1.5-5 questionnaire survey, a children's behavioral assessment scale, and diagnosed and assessed internalized problems like emotional unrest, p problematic action symptoms, physical signs, shrinkage, and attentiveness, externalization of aggressive act, sleep problem, and problematic asction symptoms and verbal development classified as other problems.
The findings of this study are as follows.
First, art therapy through a first-stage sensory medium as an intermediate subject was effected for the unrest, shrinkage and reduction of emotional responsiveness of a generally development disordered child, through which aggressive action was reduced.
Second, with recovery of stability, voluntary concern about surrounding things was increased accompanied by the development of linguistic expression. Acceptance to linguistic restriction with proper expression of one's desires at art therapeutic activity was possible, and inter-communication was changed by the quantitative increase and round song.
This study will facilitate understanding of how art therapy using a first-stage medium as an intermediate object will affect the emotional stability and overall development of the subject remaining at an early-stage in emotional, behavioral, physical and social development.
Also this study finds its significance in that it deals with a medium as a sensory and kinetic characteristics without limiting to the image of change revealed in sensory medium activity and product, and an early-stage art therapy is effective in solving psychological problem solving through the autonomous action of the subject creating intermediate objects, by which puts therapeutic value on human trust and preparation of creative amusement space.
