Abstract
The main aims of this study were to develop a group art therapy program based on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) for anger management for mothers with young children in early childhood corresponding to the first five years of life, which is a crucial period for children's social and emotional development and the formation of the mother-child relationship and to verify the effectiveness of the developed program by applying it to a group of participants. First, program development was carried out through integrated and systematic program development procedures consisting of six steps of planning, needs analysis, program construction, preliminary application of the program, development of a modified program, and program completion. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the analysis of related previous studies was conducted, a survey for the needs assessment for program development was conducted among women with young children to construct a preliminary program. Then, the preliminary program was implemented, and the program was finalized through modification and supplementation based on participants' comments and experts' validity evaluation. Second, the developed program was applied to a total of 24 mothers with young children (12 people in the experimental group and the control group, respectively) to verify its effectiveness. After a total of 10 sessions were delievered for the experimental group for 90 minutes per session once a week, a post-test was performed, and the follow-up was conducted 4 weeks after the completion of the intervention. The assessment tools used in this study were the anger expression scale for adults and parenting satisfaction scale. To analyze the data, both quantitative and qualitative analyses were carried out. For quantitative analysis, repeated measures ANOVA, simple main effects analysis, and a post-hoc test (Duncan) were conducted using SPSS 23.0 for Windows. In addition, in order to examine specific effects of the developed program, qualitative data, including transcripts of art therapy sessions, journals about anger experience written by participants, reports about experiences of each session, visual journals, and the researcher's journals, were collected and analyzed. First, REBT-based group art therapy had a significant effect on anger release, anger suppression, and anger management, which are sub-factors of anger expression. The analysis of qualitative data also showed that while participants initially suppressed their anger or released their anger through verbal or physical behaviors, they came to control their anger in a desirable way as art therapy progressed. Second, REBT-based group art therapy had a significant effect on the parent-child relationship and parental role conflict among sub-factors of parenting satisfaction, but the effect did not persist. The results of qualitative analysis also indicated changes in the parenting style and parent-child relationship. In other words, as irrational beliefs of participants were changed into rational beliefs, participants considered the developmental status of their children and showed consistent parenting behaviors focused on their children. In addition, following the intervention, the children also showed positive changes in their behaviors as mutual communication between them and their parents increased. The following conclusions can be drawn from the results of this study. First, the REBT-based group art therapy program for anger management of mothers with young children was developed using systematic and proper procedures based on the program development model and theories proposed by previous studies, and the reliability and validity of the program were secured by faithfully adhering to the development model and procedures. Second, the program developed in this study effectively contributed to the improvement of anger management of mothers with young children. Therefore, the most important outcome of this study is that it has presented an art therapy program which can be used as an early intervention program to prevent anger problems related to child rearing by developing a REBT-based group art therapy program and verifying its effectiveness by actually implementing it with a group of participants.
