Recently, pharmaceutical wastewater has started to be regarded as environmental pollutants because it contains various organic materials and it is almost non-biodegradable. In this regard, this study is focused to investigate the decomposition efficiency of pharmaceutical residues using non-thermal plasma. Diclofenac and carbamazepine were used in this study as target pharmaceuticals. The voltage was applied to the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor using two power supplies; neon transformer and middle-frequency power supply. Characteristics such as voltage, current and power of plasma were measured by an oscilloscope. The treatment time was controlled between 0 to 120 min. Air was used as an injection gas and the concentration of ozone was measured at different gas flow rates. We know that ozone plays an important role in degradation of organic compounds. As the gas flow rate is increased, ozone concentration decreases due to generation of nitrate which is acted as scavenger of ozone. Therefore, the ozone concentration tends to decrease as the air flow rate increases. In this study, the DBD plasma treatment was carried out at 20 L/min air-flow rate, where the maximum ozone was produced at a given power. The pH, ORP, electrical conductivity, and temperature were measured to characterize the pharmaceutical - polluted water treated by DBD plasma. As the plasma treatment time increased, the chemical reaction in the solution and decomposition of the pharmaceuticals occurred. Absorption analysis, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC) and liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) were analyzed to investigate the degradation efficiency of target pharmaceuticals treated by plasma. With increasing the treatment time of plasma, the absorbance at wavelength of target drugs gradually decreases and removal efficiency of COD and TOC increased. From the results of TOC measurements, the initial concentration of DCF and CBZ were reduced up to about 60% and 40% after 120 min treatment. In addition, quantitative analysis of LC-MS/MS showed that the structural degradation of the target drugs was more than 99%. It is believed from the analysis of TOC and LC-MS/MS that the non-thermal underwater plasma in this study can destruct the chemical structure of DCF and CBZ more than at least 99%. Meanwhile , the perfect oxidation to CO2 and H2O of DCF and CBZ was about 60% and 40%, respectively, at given experimental parameters. Eventually, the DBD plasma with multi-holes on dielectric in water, which makes further increased interface reaction between plasma-related species and water, will be attractive to degrade organic pollutant materials in water.
