A professional golfer’s standard for perfection has significant influences on mental health of controlling emotions and golf performance elements. However, there is lack of research on perfectionism and mental health in domestic golf psychology field. Thus, the purpose of this study is to verify the influence of a professional golfer’s perfectionism on mental health and golf performance. For the research, this study conducted a survey on golfers registered as regular member in KPGA and KLPGA which are participating in 2018 1st Tour and 2nd Tour Tournaments. Among the 480 collected questionnaires, this study analyzed 462 questionnaires after excluding the 18 unfaithfully answered questionnaires. For the collected data, this study conducted descriptive statistics analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, one-way ANOVA, independent sample t-test, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 23.0 statistics program. This study deduced outcomes based on above analysis methods and the summary of results are as follows. First, multi-dimensional perfectionism, mental health, and golf performance had partial significant difference based on demographic characteristic. In the mental health based on the gender, female professional golfers were more vulnerable to negative emotion than male professional golfers. In golf performance based on the gender, male professional golfers had longer driving distance in drive shot than female professional golfers while female professional golfers were better fairway accurate rate, recovery rate, and average number of putting than male professional golfers. In perfectionism based on the experience, professional golfers with less experience were highly influenced by other-oriented perfectionism. Also, in mental health, professional golfers with higher experiences had less anxiety and depression. The golf performance based on experience had partial significant difference. It is assumed that professional golfers with higher golf experiences have less anxiety based on golf competition experiences while having careful course management. Secondly, the professional golfers’ multi-dimensional perfectionism, mental health, and golf performance had partially significant correlation. The professional golfers showed self-oriented perfectionism and mental health’s subfactor of anxiety showed positive correlation while socially prescribed perfectionism and other-oriented perfectionism had statistically significant correlation with anxiety, depression, and physical symptom of mental health. In the relationship between perfectionism and golf performance, other-oriented perfectionism formed statistically significant positive correlation with golf performance’s subfactor of scoring average. In contrary, self-oriented perfectionism had statistically significant negative correlation with golf performance’s subfactor of scoring average. In addition, the relationship between mental health and golf performance showed partially significant difference. Third, the professional golfers’ multi-dimensional perfectionism, mental health, and golf performance had partially significant influence. In the influence of professional golfers’ perfectionism on mental health, the self-oriented perfectionism, socially prescribed perfectionism, and other-oriented perfectionism influenced on anxiety while socially prescribed perfectionism and other-oriented perfectionism had influence on depression and physical symptoms. In the influence of perfectionism on golf performance, higher self-oriented perfectionism contributed in lowering the scoring average while higher other-oriented perfectionism helped in raising the scoring average. Therefore, perfectionism has negative influence on golf performance. In the influence of mental health on golf performance, the mental health’s subfactor including anxiety, depression, and physical symptom showed statistically significant difference. The research results showed that higher perfectionism had negative influence on mental health of professional golfers and it is assumed that physical pressure influences on mental health and golf performance by complex interaction of external environment and mental state of professional golfers.
