The Hyperloop system is a concept that allows a train to travel through a near-vacuum tunnel at transonic speeds. The presence of high-pressure gradients around the Hyperloop pods means that aerodynamic drag is one of the important factors in analyzing such systems. Factors such as the blockage ratio (BR), pod speed/length, tube pressure, and temperature affect the aerodynamic drag, but the relationships between the drag and these parameters have not yet been comprehensively examined. In this study, we investigate the flow phenomena of a Hyperloop system, focusing on the effects of changes in the above parameters. Two-dimensional axisymmetric simulations are performed in a large parameter space covering various BR values (0.25, 0.36), pod speeds (50–350 m/s), pod lengths (10.75–86 m), tube pressures (100–1000 Pa), and tube temperatures (275–325 K). The drag increases as the BR, pod speed/length, and tube pressure increase, and increases beyond the critical Mach number. As BR increases, the overall drags are affected. This is because of the smaller critical Mach number for a larger blockage ratio. As the pod length increases, the total and pressure drags do not change, but there is a influence on the friction drag. The shock waves occur near the end of the pod at 200 m/s for BR = 0.36. At this point, the strong shock-cell structure at the end of the pod is caused by severe choking of the flow around the pod. At tube pressures above 500 Pa, the friction drag increases under the increased turbulence intensity near the pod surface. As tube temperatures increase, the onset of choking is delayed and the aerodynamic drag is reduced.
