Recently, engineering plastics are increasingly replacing metal in many applications. To enhance their mechanical properties, the reinforcement is frequently incorporated into polymer matrix. There are many kinds of reinforcing fillers such as glass fiber, carbon fiber etc. Such enhancement is also possible with nano sized filler with larger aspect ratio than the macro sized filler. However, usually agglomeration of filler due to Van der Waals force, Coulomb force and other forces among nanoparticles may hinder enhancement of mechanical property. In this study, Polyamide66 was used as a matrix. Polyamide66/nanocarbon (PA66/NC) composites were fabricated by dispersing various carbon nanomaterials, namely graphene nanoplatelets, graphene oxide, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, into polymer matrix via melt mixing. In this study, relative dispersion index (RDI) was calculated to evaluate dispersion of the fillers, and also mechanical property measured by the tensile test. Hypothesis testing of the equality of means was performed using a one-tailed test. We quantified the dispersion by analyzing frequency distributions of light intensity transmitted through film samples. By applying 1 wt% of the hybrid filler consisting of graphene oxide and multiwall carbon nanotubes to polyamide 66, the Young's modulus, yield stress, and tensile strength increased 26.3%, 33.7% and 1.3% respectively compared to those of neat polyamide 66. As a conclusion, the hybrid nanocarbon filler is efficient to reinforce mechanical properties of PA66 and results in good dispersion. RDI is a good indicator of reliability of the mechanical properties of the composite.
