The main air compressor in the urban railway, which is an essential device to provide compressed air to a brake, power collector, the device of a passenger door and so on, can trigger the halt of the urban railway by stopping compressed air. The main air compressor of domestic urban railways in South Korea, the oil-feeding compressor has been changed into the non-lube reciprocating compressor since 2008. The urban railway, Shinbundang line first initiated the use of the non-lube reciprocating compressor. This change is because the non-lube reciprocating compressor can complement the disadvantage which the oil-feeding compressor has. To be specific, the oil-feeding compressor used oil to lubricated and cool friction in gears. However, the non-lube reciprocating compressor not only complement the disadvantage of the oil-feeding compressor but the improvement of maintainability. Manufacturers of the non-lube reciprocating compressor say that maintainability improves up to 30 to 50%. This study inter-compared actual data on the operation of urban railways having different compressors, and test analysis on compressors of the urban railway. These data were from urban railways with the oil-feeding compressor which have operated since 1980, and urban railways with the non-lube reciprocating compressor which have operated for a decade.
For doing this study, compressors were chosen considering several things such as the capacity of a compressor and the environment of operating urban railways. Line 5 of Seoul Metro using the oil-feeding compressor, Hanam line which is the extension of Line 5 using the non-lube reciprocating compressor, 3 railways of Line 7 of Seoul Metro using the oil-feeding compressor, and Shinbundang line using the non-lube reciprocating compressor were selected to investigate.
In order to compare compressors, variables were 'life cycle cost depending on a type of a compressor', and 'Mean Kilometer Between Failure (MKBF) and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) depending on a type of a compressor'. 'life cycle cost depending on a type of a compressor' included an initial acquisition cost, maintenance expense, and a disposal cost). Vibration and noise were chosen as primary issues. In terms of the total life cycle cost (LCC), labor cost was based on the estimate of the manufacturer producing a compressor, the cost of materials by the operating company, and an airlift operation by the operating company. Also, disposal costs were contained after the use of the sustained endurance for the compressor.
Results showed that the non-lube reciprocating compressor was approximately 23% more economical than the oil-feeding compressor. It implies that in case of one main air compressor of which sustained endurance is 25 years, there happens a gap that is around 2,126 ten thousand won between the uses of the non-lube reciprocating compressor and the oil-feeding compressor. This amount is yield applying to an actual discount 2.81%. For doing this, interest rate for a fix deposit announced by the Bank of Korea for past 10 years, and inflation were considered.
As for MKBF, the non-lube reciprocating compressor had 4,131,000km and the oil-feeding compressor had 2,408,917km. That is, when it comes to MKBF, the non-lube reciprocating compressor had more 1,772,084km than the oil-feeding compressor. The MKBF of the non-lube reciprocating compressor was 42% higher than that of the oil-feeding compressor. In terms of MTBF, the non-lube reciprocating compressor had 85,528h and the oil-feeding compressor had 71,287h. In respect with MTBF, the non-lube reciprocating compressor had more 14,241h than the oil-feeding compressor. Namely, the MTBF of the non-lube reciprocating compressor had more 17% than that of the oil-feeding compressor.
Since 2008, the use of the non-lube reciprocating compressor has been increased up to 33%. However, the non-lube reciprocating compressor produced larger vibration and louder noise due to its structure than the oil-feeding compressor. Manufacturers and operating companies paid attention to these disadvantages of the non-lube reciprocating compressor. Thus, this study inter-compared test analyses. Results showed that the vibratory acceleration of the non-lube reciprocating compressor while operating urban railways had 0.010g in a lateral direction and had 0.017g in a vertical direction. In sum, the non-lube reciprocating compressor had a high vibratory acceleration. When the cabin of the urban railway and an air compressor were maneuvered, the measurement within 1 m showed that the non-lube reciprocating compressor had 1.2dB in the cabin of the urban railway and 1.5dB in 1m.
This study provides data which organizations operating the urban railway can refer to when making a plan to purchase parts and to order the manufacture of the new railway. Furthermore, it offers improvements to supplement the disadvantage of the non-lube reciprocating compressor, which in recent days draws interest.
