단어강세에 따른 음의 높낮이와 초등학생 영어 발음의 유창성과 정확성의 상관관계 The Correlation of Pitch in Word Stress with Fluency and Accuracy in Primary Learners' English Pronunciation원문보기

The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation of pitch in word stress with fluency and accuracy in primary learners' English pronunciation. Since the Korean English education system focuses on the communicative approach, which places a heavier focus on fluency rather than accuracy, intelligible pronunciation is one of the main goals of English education. Considering the difference between the Korean language and English, the most distinctive feature is that Korean is a syllable-timed language, while English is a stress-timed language. Stress in Korean is not prominent when compared with English. Generally, in Korean the first syllable tends to be stressed and there are also no weakened and reduced syllables. Due to these stress elements of their mother tongue, Korean speakers have difficulty when communicating in English with native speakers. This is because different stress patterns can alter word meaning in English. In general, there is word stress and sentence stress. Primary learners tend to communicate in very short sentences with separated words. Therefore, this study focuses especially on word stress and its correlation with fluency and accuracy in English pronunciation. This study establishes two subjects of inquiry. First, what is the correlation between the pitch in English word stress with fluency in Primary learners' English pronunciation? Second, what is the correlation between the pitch in English word stress with accuracy in Primary learners' English pronunciation? The paragraph containing two-syllabled words with different stresses(strong-weak and weak-strong) and three-syllabled words with different stresses(strong-weak, weak-strong) was produced. Fourth grade and sixth grade students were recorded reading the paragraph out loud. The two-syllabled words and the three-syllabled words in the recorded paragraph were analyzed by Praat, which is a tool of acoustic analysis. Praat analyzed the gap between the lowest pitch in unstressed syllables with the highest pitch in stressed syllables. Furthermore, five Korean English teachers and two native English teachers evaluated their fluency and accuracy while listening to the recording using the Likert scale from one to nine points. Then, the correlation of pitch in word stress with fluency and accuracy in Primary English learners' English pronunciation was analyzed. There are four criteria. First, grades were separately analyzed. In fourth grade learners, there was generally more correlation with fluency rather than accuracy. The words with 'strong-weak' stressed syllables showed more correlation than those with 'weak-strong' stressed syllables in both fluency and accuracy. Advanced learners have a bigger gap in pitch between the lowest pitch of unstressed syllables and the highest pitch of stressed syllables. This means that students who had a high English ability had a bigger gap in pitch. There was the least amount of correlation for the word 'family', which had the lowest gap in pitch. In sixth grade students, the words with 'strong-weak' stressed syllables showed more correlation than those with 'weak-strong' stressed syllables in both fluency and accuracy. There was the biggest gap in pitch for the word 'hungry'. There was the lowest gap in pitch for the word 'family'. So, they showed a low correlation in both fluency and accuracy. Second, the correlation of pitch in word stress with fluency and accuracy in low-level and advanced-level learners was analyzed. Generally, there were more negative correlations for low-level learners than for advanced-level learners. There were more higher curves on unstressed syllables than lower curves on stressed ones for low-level learners. There were negative correlations on the words 'family' and 'hungry', revealing that low-level learners have difficulty producing 'strong-weak' stress patterns. In contrast, the words 'Japan' and 'potatoes', which have 'weak-strong' stressed syllables, showed a positive correlation. Third, a comparison of both fourth and sixth grade learners on the correlation of pitch in word stress with fluency and accuracy was analyzed. Both fourth grade and sixth grade learners showed more correlation on 'weak-strong' stressed syllable words such as 'Japan' and 'potatoes', rather than 'strong-weak' stressed words like 'hungry' and 'family' in their fluency and accuracy. 'Hungry', which is a two-syllable word, had more correlation than 'family', which is a three-syllable word. There was a bigger gap in pitch between the lowest pitch of unstressed syllables and the highest pitch of stressed syllables for advanced learners than low-level learners. Both fourth and sixth grade learners showed the biggest gap of pitch on the word 'hungry' between low-level and advanced learners. Sixth grade learners had more difficulty producing stress on the word 'family' than fourth grade learners did. In fact, fourth grade learners had 2.34 more points in fluency and 2.9 more points in accuracy than sixth grade learners. This means that there is a bigger gap between low-level and advanced learners for fourth grade rather than sixth grade. Fourth, the correlation of pitch in word stress with fluency and accuracy in evaluators was analyzed. There was a similar tendency between Korean English teachers and native English teachers for each word correlation. However, native English teachers showed more correlation on accuracy rather than fluency for sixth grade learners, while Korean English teachers showed more correlation on fluency rather than accuracy for sixth grade learners.
