Due to the recent economic recession, the delinquency rate has increased as corporate and personal loans have increased, which has also affected the bad loans of financial institutions. The purpose of this study is examine the effects of personal characteristics, loan characteristics, interest rate characteristics and asset characteristics of borrowers on credit risk, delinquency possibility and default probability. In doing so, this study applies both path model and structural equation model to the data of credit unions in the city of Daegu, and in this respect this study is differentiated from previous studies. The first research model, which is a path model extending the multiple regression models used in the previous studies, is estimated and analyzed, The major results are summarized as follows. First, it is found that the days in arrears, normal-to-overdue interest ratio, current credit rating (CB1), delinquency date, overdue interest, delinquency interest for the current year, loan balance ratio, debt settlement, repayment method and gender have significant effects on the asset soundness. Second, equity investment, repayment method and normal interest are not shown to affect the capital ratio. However, it turns out that CB0 (credit rating at the time of loan), loan amount, maturity, spread and deposits have a significant effect on the capital ratio. Third, it turns out that the maturity of loan does not affect CB01 (credit rating change), but that CB0 (CB rating at the time of loan), equity investment, loan amount, repayment method, normal interest, spread and deposits affect CB01 (credit rating change). Fourth, the capital ratio is found to have no effect on debt settlement, delinquency date and days in arrears. This implies that the debtors who have borrowed from the credit union do not have enough free funds. Fifth, CB01 (credit rating change) is found to affect debt settlement, delinquency date, and days in arrears. Sixth, it has been shown that the capital ratio does not affect the asset soundness. However, it turns out that debt settlement, delinquency date, days in arrears and CB01 (credit rating change) affect the asset soundness.. Since the second research model, which is a SEM (Structural Equation Model) composed of formative indicators, can not be in practice analyzed by AMOS, smartPLS and R have been employed to estimate the model with PLS (Partial Least Squares) method and to evaluate the fitness of the estimated model. The major results are as follows. First, it turns out that the personal characteristics of the debtor affect the possibility of default and credit risk, but do not affect the possibility of delinquency. And the interest rate characteristics is turned out to affect the possibility of default, credit risk, and the possibility of delinquency. Second, loan characteristics consisting of collateral type, loan amount, maturity of loan and repayment method is found to have no effect on default possibility and credit risk but to have an effect on delinquency possibility. Asset characteristics are found to affect credit risk, delinquency possibility and default possibility. Third, credit risk is shown to affect the possibilities of default and delinquency, and the possibility of delinquency is found to affect the possibility of default. Fourth, through the analysis of specific indirect effects, it is possible to examine the dynamic process of non-performing loans. This result can lead financial institutions to select the borrowers through more rigorous loan examination and thus to manage the loan receivables more efficiently. One of the limitations of this study is that the scope of the sample data analyzed is primarily restricted to the debtors who have borrowed from several credit unions located in the city of Daegu. Due to this limitation, it is somewhat difficult to generalize the results of this study to the characteristics of the whole financial institutions. Therefore, in the future research it is necessary to analyze the debtors who have borrowed not only from the credit unions based in the city of Daegu, but also from the credit unions headquartered in other cities to derive more general results. In addition, since this study has extracted the sample data based on a specific time point, it is not possible to include and analyze the dynamic factors reflecting the changes of time and external environment in the research model. Also, since the detailed financial data related to the debtors, considered to be important in understanding the possibility of default on the part of the debtors, are not included in the research model. Thus in the future research, it is necessary to include the various detailed financial variables related to the debtors and the dynamic factors in the model to derive more comprehensive and general results.
