Recently, the International Maritime Organization(IMO) has applied the Energy Efficiency Design Index(EEDI) for Green-House Gas(GHG) emissions control due to global warming effects to vessels built in 2013. Since the goal is to reduce GHG emissions by up to 30% for the year 2025. Therefore, researches for decreasing the operating expenditure of the current ship are actively conducted. Frictional resistance up to 70 ~ 80% of the resistance of low speed and large volume vessels. Therefore, the need for research to apply the air lubrication system to the ship, which reduces the friction resistance of the ship by injecting air into the bottom of the ship, is gradually expanding. In this study, a flat panel was installed in the high-speed current tank to determine the diffusion characteristics and resistance reduction effect of the air layer necessary for the performance estimation of the air lubrication technology. Experiments were conducted to confirm the resistance reduction tendency and the behavior of the air layer according to the flow rate and the air flow rate by producing the injection hole with different scales in the ship’s bottom part. As a result, the degree of diffusion, divergent angle and resistance reduction rate of the air layer increased as the air flow rate increased in the same flow rate condition, but the critical flow rate was confirmed. In addition, a variable was proposed to propose an estimation formula for predicting the angle of lubrication divergent according to the injection condition, and each estimation formula using this was proposed. It is thought that the optimal arrangement is possible by minimizing the size and number of injection hole of the real ship air lubrication system using each proposed diverging estimation equation.
