Magnesium-air battery system has been a promising electrochemical power source as an one of emergency power battery for private and household electrical appliance due to their high volumetric capacity and cell voltage. However, for commercialization of magnesium-air battery was required superior electrochemical performance of system. Therefore, we intend to improve the performance of magnesium-air battery through enhanced electrochemical activity under highly concentrated electrolyte. In addition, the application of AZ series magnesium alloy (AZ31B, AZ61) with high corrosion resistance was expected to achieve good performance in highly concentrated electrolytes. When two kinds of magnesium alloys were applied to anodes, the highest electrochemical performance of magnesium-air battery was observed in a system in which the AZ61 anode was measured in a 2 mol dm-3 NaCl electrolyte. The highest energy density of AZ61 anode was 1860 Wh kg-1, while the lowest value of 1723 Wh kg-1 was obtained in a system using 0.6 mol dm-3 NaCl electrolyte. Differences in electrochemical behavior by various electrolyte concentrations were investigated through the potentiodynamic polarization test. These results show the enhanced electrochemical activity due to the increasing reaction between anode and electrolyte in system by applied highly concentrated electrolyte. The high electrochemical activity of interface reaction on anode can quickly form a protective film, and then the formed protective film can reduce the loss of magnesium anode, thereby preventing decrease of discharge capacity. The difference electrochemical features in the magnesium-air battery using two anodes (AZ31B, AZ61) was also noticeable. Compared to the highest energy density of 1860 Wh kg-1 of AZ61 anode, a low energy density of 1408 Wh kg-1 was observed when the AZ31B anode was applied at the identical concentration of the electrolyte. In addition, the AZ31B anode exhibited lower electrochemical performance than the AZ61 anode in all concentration conditions of electrolyte. To investigate the cause of different electrochemical behavior, the shapes and components of the discharge products formed on the two magnesium anodes were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The XPS results of two magnesium anodes exhibited that the uniformity of aluminum oxide in the discharge product formed on the surface was different. The aluminum oxide content of discharge products formed on the AZ31B anode was relatively non-uniform, which can lead to a loss of magnesium by lowering the corrosion resistance of the anode. By the SEM results of the AZ31B anode, magnesium loss through low corrosion resistance was confirmed by a large pit shape image known as the "chunk effect". In this study, it was confirmed that the magnesium-air battery with highly concentrated electrolyte can realize high electrochemical performance. Furthermore, this study for effect of electrochemical properties by the electrolyte concentration can contribute to the development of magnesium-air battery system with optimal performance.
